While in STL recently, I passed a billboard advertising this:

Well, kiss my grits - there is a type of whiskey I have yet to try! Anyone tried Bernheim's or another example of the species? I'd like to get some background and impressions from me fellow LTH-ers before taking the plunge and buying a bottle....

    Thanks,

    Davooda

Koval also makes a wheat whiskey (as well as ones with oats, rye, spelt, and millet). I've had the wheat and liked it a lot. It's a bit on the sweet side, but quite smooth.

Death's Door White Whiskey is 80% wheat and 20% barley.

For more about background on the Bernheim wheat whiskey you can't get any better than Chuck Cowdery's (a LTH member if not recent poster) blog here, http://chuckcowdery.blogspot.com/2010/0 ... nheim.html

My own opinion is that if you are a whiskey aficionado it is worth the purchase for a subtle, light drinking whiskey and too compare and contrast with the so called wheater bourbons (51% corn mash bill) of Makers Mark, Van Winkle, Weller, Old Fitzgerald and Rebel Yell, the latter two also distilled at Bernheim by Heaven Hill. As to nose and taste it justifies its 51% wheat mash bill and why "wheat" is in its name. You should get fresh baked bread, biscuit, light sugar, hints of marmalade and mint. I haven't had the Koval or any other craft distillery (Dryfly also has one) version.

Awesome information from Chuck - much appreciated. I plan to add some Bernheim and Rittenhouse to the back-bar posthaste.

Love LTH - the font of all things important to my tastebuds :D

    Cheers,
