Has anyone else been to the newly remodeled/rebuilt Jewel on Southport yet? I visited briefly today and was completely put off by the poor quality of Produce, horrible layout and just plain cheap atmosphere that the store exuded. Although it has only been open for a week, its easily the worst of the Jewel's in the area. They seem like they want to capture some of the Whole Foods/Trader Joe's set, but fail miserably. From the outside its very aesthetically inviting, covering the most of the block between Addison and Waveland. But on the inside, it has the look and feel of something that was put up quickly and cheaply. To add square footage to the building they put the parking lot in the basement (a la Whole Foods); unfortunately the garage enters from and exits onto a very busy Southport Avenue necessitating a guard to be posted to prevent garage traffic from flattening pedestrians.

I'll give it another try in a few months; even a chain like that has to work out kinks. For my money though, the Jewel on Ashland and Wellington achieves the Whole Foods aesthetic at a reasonable price.

Yeah, one of my architect friends went in and said it was the worst store layout he's ever seen.
When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University!
