Study: Hey, Hipsters, Mexican Coke Might Be a Myth

So let me see, the American Coca Cola bottling cartel paid for a study to demonstrate that there was no perceptible taste difference between their product and one made by a cartel in another country (from which they make no money)? No conflict of interest there. Everybody knows that some Mexican Coke is made with HFCS. Unless they specifically used Coke made with sucrose in the study, it means nothing.

On reading the actual study, the Mexican Coke they bought said it was made with sugar on the label.

In that case, I find it hard to believe that people could not taste the difference. I am not a cola drinker, so I would probably have trouble telling them apart. On the other hand, with clear pops like sprite or 7up, I can definitely taste a difference between sugar and HFCS. The same goes for fruit flavored pops like fanta or squirt. It should not be that hard to replicate the study. Anybody up for a sugar v. syrup showdown?

Actually not sure whether I prefer Sierra Mist Natural to its HFCS counterpart, as the difference in taste is not as great as I originally expected. Same goes for Pepsi Throwback (& Mexican Pepsi from Jewel) versus the current U.S. incarnation, but I definitely like Mountain Dew Throwback over the standard Dew (which I don't dislike by any means). After seeing an ad for Mexican and Polish(!) Orange Fanta in a grocery ad recently (on sale at Lincolnwood Produce on 7175 Lincoln through Wednesday?), I'm thinking of paying extra to add some European flavor to the sample set. A blind taste test sounds intimidating!

I have actually bought elderberry flavored fanta at Devon Market. I believe it was from Macedonia. It was weird, but in a good way. I also recently bought some Sierra Mist Cranberry splash made with sugar, and thought it had a much crisper flavor and mouthfeel. I would seriously be interested in putting together a tasting. We should do it.

I've recently been on a Jarritos Manderin (orange) kick. It's made with sugar (and is not overly sweet).

This is a pretty old thread and Mexi-Coke is now pretty common and widely avialable. I was in Carbondale a couple of weeks ago and it was on the shelf in their local Schnuck's grocery. If it made it to Carbondale, the market has pretty well been saturated.

Not really. Schnuck's has carried it chain-wide for the past year or so including their Logli stores in Rockford.

Curiously, the Costco in Mt Prospect/Randhurst was shilling and sampling Mexican Pepsi with cane sugar.
While missing the Coke brown spice/piney bite, it had all that Mexicoke carameliness.
