Right after I posted, I went back in to get one more ticket for The Wife...and they were gone. I think there was only about a hundred or so available. Oh well. Will report back if anything momentous occurs at the event.

No problem. You sold it better by highlighting "free." My editor just told me that one magical ticket was added a few minutes ago. It's probably gone by now, but in case anyone wants to try... David and any other LTHers who were able to snag tickets--see you at TVH next Monday.

If a quarter century in marketing has taught me one thing, it's that people respond well to FREE.

I noted this quote on the eventbrite page:
Note: Tickets do not guarantee entry. Entrance is on a first come, first serve basis. RSVP is required and names will be checked at the door.

It means that you shouldn't consider cranking up the mimeograph machine you have stashed in the basement and printing up phony tickets.

Sounds like a disclaimer that roughly translates to "We may or may not have planned this very well, so come prepared with a backup plan in case you get there, ticket in hand, only to find that the door area has devolved into a total clusterf**k where tempers are flaring and tickets & RSVPs mean nothing."

It's possible that my interpretation is a tad cynical, but that warning does sound somewhat ominous to me.

    Hi,

I could be even more cynical: "We reserve the right to size you up and reject you."

That's kinda what it sounds like to me. Or maybe, roughly, "We are hoping that lots of people with important names and connections come to this event, but we're not so naïve as to think that they really will. And if one or two of them do surprise us by coming, the last thing we want them to see is an empty room. So you can have a ticket. But if the important people do show up, your ticket will be good only for entrance to the Blue Line Bar & Grill a few yards away."

    I'll take a stab:

    "Tickets do not guarantee entry."
Translation: Just because you have a ticket does not mean you will be allowed in the door.

"Entrance is on a first come, first serve basis."
Translation: Even if you have a ticket, it may be too crowded by the time you arrive, and you may be denied entry.

"RSVP is required and names will be checked at the door."
    Translation: Tickets are non-transferable.

happy_stomach, when you posted your announcement, did you sense (as I did) that the discussion would inevitably trend toward the conclusion: if you go to this event, you are indeed a fool?

Nah, I've reserved that title for people who buy tickets for an event to promote Amanda Hesser's cookbook.

I'm just disappointed that it took more than 12 hours. Serves me right for posting at midnight.

We went to the Violet Hour event this past Monday - free bourbon promo for Woodford Reserve. Very enjoyable but while the tix said doors opened at 7, we did not get in until about 8:30 or so though the line was not very long at all at 6:45 or so. Lot's of folks dashed across to Big Star meanwhile and the weather was gorgeous so we had fun but how the crowd was managed was a bit opaque. Similar situation I think since they checked ID for each ticket (and even though I had one, they instead counted me as a "plus one" for a coworker's friend) Great drinks (4 drink tix each but not enough time for me as a real lightweight to get past 1 1/2), really tasty appetizers and we had fun but I'm not sure if everyone got in and the place was jammed.

Thanks to late night LTH reading, I got a ticket for this coming Monday but have just heard I have to fly to SF for a speed business trip (no time even to have a decent dinner at Osha Thai!) so I'm disappointed ... and gather I cannot transfer my ticket to my coworker who is very unhappy she missed them.

I need to schedule some real VH time when I can sit with friends and actually enjoy the wares.

Big fun. Usual excellent drinks and good food.

I think everyone who wanted in was in.

I didn't get to go, but my friend who went said he had a swell time and that the drinks and food were excellent and he met some very interesting food journalists.

He said they let people in about 10 minutes after 6 and were apologetic about the short delay.
