    Hello,

Anyone know where I can find these products? Dominicks used to carry them but don't any longer, and the African meat stores that once lined Howard St seem to be no more. Anyone seen it on a shelf recently?

    Hi there :)

In the Walker's Wood jerk line, I always preferred the paste over the marinade. The paste always had a good deal of flavor and heat while the marinade seemed a little void in the areas.

You may be surprised what asking a manager or at the customer service desk will do. If the store still buys from that supplier it's not uncommon for any store to order it for you, with no obligations either.

give it a try...even at stores that you haven't seen it at before.

    good luck,
    dan

I can guarantee you that the Tony's Fine Foods in North Riverside has both paste and marinade - though I'm not sure how they are named. I think the paste product in the short jar is labeled "seasoning?" You might wanna try calling the Tony's on Central Park and Fullerton in city proper unless there is a closer location to you. Also, The Ultra Foods in Forest Park has it, but I think it's 2 bux more than Tony's. Sorry my leads are in the near west burbs, but I KNOW they have it. I pass it at least once a week to check for it to be on sale. I can wait it out, because I've still got a decent batch of homemade. It's easy to make. That Walkerswood stuff is totally delicious tho. I've not tried the other brands I see like Boston (which Tony's also has.)

I have seen it fairly recently at the Rogers Park Fruit Market, but I don't know if they have it currently in stock. If I stop there soon, I will check for you.

The Treasure Island in Hyde Park had the paste in stock, as of last week, and I see no reason why it would not still be in stock.

Strack and VanTil still stocks Walkerswood Jamaican Jerk (Paste) Seasoning in the same area as the BBQ sauces-
The 10 oz. bottle sells for around $3.49 if memory serves me correctly.

Last time I checked- The World Market in Evanston as well as Fresh Farms on Touhy in Niles, stocked
    Walkerswood as well!

The Rogers Park Fruit Market has it in stock (saw it today), along with about 15 other kinds of jerk seasoning and Jamaican BBQ sauce.

Marketplace on Oakton carries it on a regular basis. Reliable source for a lot of Carribbean ingredients.

Oddly enough (and only in Chicago!)
the Vietnamese market called Tai Nam has it in the 1st Aisle.

    $3.75 each.
And- the Jerk Marinade in the 17 oz. bottle, for $4.69 :D

For comparison pricing, last time I bought some at Strack & VanTill, the price had crept upwards of $6.00,
for the Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning in the familiar 10oz. jar. :?

I love the overlap of West Indian/African and Balkan stuff with the SE Asian in Uptown. Golden Pacific used to have a significant former Yugo section when it opened, simply because of local demand from shoppers on the surrounding blocks according to the manager. That part of the city is a common point of first arrival for many Kingstonians, so it [ed: stocking jerk paste] makes some kinda sense.

They sell various Walkers Wood products at the Pete's Market on 44th and Pulaski (and I imagine at other locations.) I noted today what jerk products in general they have. Right now, there's 8 shelves about two feet wide dedicate to just jerk pastes, marinades, and sauces. They have Walkers Wood Mild ($5.49) and Walkers Wood Hot & Spicy ($4.99) pastes. They also have the marinade. In addition, they have jerk pastes from Pedro Plains, Jamaican Country Style, Eclipse, Carib, Eatons (the Eatons varieties include Boston Bay style, mild, and hot pastes). There are also marinades by Pedro Plains, Walkers Wood (as mentioned), and Island Pit. In addition, they have Eatons Jerk Ketchup, Triple J Jerk sauce, and Pedro plains honey jerk sauce.

That's all I was able to note on my phone. There were a few other products, too, (including Jamaican hot sauces) so that's not meant to be a complete list.

I am intrigued by the Eaton's products. According to their website, the Boston Bay style is basically an ultra hot jerk paste, so that's up my alley. I'm just going to have to buy up a bunch of these pastes one day and have myself a good ol' jerk-off. Wait, that didn't come out right.

Seeing this thread yesterday inspired me to go home and jerk some chicken legs after work. They came out great and it was a perfect night for grilling. I've got 4 or 5 more jars of the jerk seasoning in my cabinet.

They carry the jerk sauce and the jerk seasoning at Ultra on Roosevelt in Forest Park last time I checked. I stocked up last summer so I haven't had to get it there in a while. But, I assume they'd still have it.

    Old World Market
    5129 N. Broadway,
    Chicago,IL

    and
discovered this treasure trove of Jerk Sauces, Jerk Spices, and Marinades....including a new "Mild" variety of Walkerswood-
perfect for when my "ooooh- it's-too-spicy" cousins come for a BBQ!

Thanks for the info on Old World Market - I've noticed that my favorite brand, JCS Boston, is getting harder and harder to find at my usual RP and Skokie haunts. Good to have a new source as the weather warms up. I'd better stock up soon.

JCS, by the way, is excruciatingly hair-smokin' hot - so much so that there is a dead-serious keep-out-of-reach-of-children label warning. Not for the faint of heart or palate! But so delicious. A big dollop thinned with mango, guava, or pineapple juice is the easiest marinade going.
