With winter approaching, I forsee a lot of a wonton soup in my future. I am not the greatest cook - so take this what it is - I finally figured out how to make a tasty wonton soup broth, but am still having a hard time with the actual wonton part. I cannot seem to make a very good wonton - I can make a passable wonton, but not a great wonton. Thus, I have resigned myself to purchasing frozen wontons.

I have tried both versions I have seen at H-Mart and meh... They are alright, but not great. So, where can I purchase good frozen wontons? I am not looking for dumplings, but specifically wontons for soup. I read on an older Chowhound that people have had success buying them frozen from Chinese restaurants. Has anyone tried that here in Chicago? If so, where? Anywhere else I should look? I go to Hmart and Matsuwa, but haven't looked for Chinatown based stores. Are there any?

I think that your expectations for frozen wontons wrappers are not achievable.
I have used frozen wonton wrappers from H-mart and other places and I have been happy with them.

Edit: maybe I misunderstood your post. Are you looking for complete frozen wontons or just frozen wonton wrappers? I was speaking to frozen wonton wrappers.

The whole thing... IE - Frozen wontons with some kind of meat (I am not picky - I like both the shrimp and the pork versions)... But, maybe my version of homemade wonton isn't working because the wrappers aren't good?

I personally like the Wei Chuan brand of frozen wontons. These are Hong Kong style so do have shrimp inside. This brand is available at many of the Chinese grocery stores like Chinatown Market, Mayflower, Richwell, etc. Give them a try and let us know what you think.

I think the Wei Chuan brand are decent for what they are. I certainly buy them from time to time. But I think they're available at H Mart so OP may already have tried them.

As for wrappers, you should be able to buy fresh ones in an Asian market including H Mart. They freeze ok but if you're making a batch (which you plan to subsequently freeze) why not start from fresh. I think wontons are among the easier things to make. It's not like dumplings where a lot more skill is needed if you want to make the wrappers yourself (I think few Chinese families make their own wonton wrappers, but many make their own dumpling wrappers). The folding is much easier for wontons too. Just a matter of getting good ingredients for the filling (get pork that is somewhat fatty if you're using pork--regular supermarket ground pork is too lean) and get it to a flavor you like (cook and taste a small bit of the filling first). Unless there are some frozen wontons I'm not aware of, I think you'll easily get better wontons if you're willing to take the time to make them yourself.

Is there a restaurant whose wontons you really like? Why not ask them if they'll make you up a batch?

Then you can take them home and freeze them.
