I am planning to host a Father's Day lunch this Sunday and I am planning on making a recipe I found in the current July issue of Bon Appetit...Chicken with Tangerine, Honey and Chipotle glaze. I am having difficulty finding tangerine juice here in the western burbs. Does anyone know where I can find tangerine juice out this way? If all else fails, can I substitute 2c. fresh orange juice for the 2c. fresh tangerine juice? My concern with the orange juice is that it may be too acidic or not as sweet.

    Thanks.

Caputo's on Harlem carries tangerine juice ... at least it did a few months ago. I have also been seeing it in both Jewel and Dominicks store. I have not been buying much as it carries a significant premium over orange juice.

If I remember right, the tangerine juice was a bit less acidic than the orange juice, although I doubt that there would be much difference when mixed with honey and chipotle.

You should be able to find tangerines in the grocery stores... just grab a few pounds and juice 'em :)

It won't be fresh juice, but Tropicana has a tangerine blend in their not-from-concentrate cartons. If nothing else, it might help you figure out what taste notes to bring out, if you decide you don't want to use that.

My experience with tangerines are that they are both sweeter and tarter than standard juice oranges. A little lemon juice, a bit of sugar or honey and some grated orange peel will probably give you a good flavor.

Besides, you're teaming it with Chipotle. In the words of Peter Schikele on P.D.Q. Bach's concerto for Bagpipe and Lute, "It's a nice lute. Think about the lute while you listen to the bagpipe."

But seriously: if you can't find a tangerine in your local market, add a little peel from your oranges. Chipotle works well with sweet, so a little extra sugar won't hurt either.

It's hard to find good tangerines at this time of year.

At many supermarkets, tangerine juice can be found in a refrigerated section in or near the produce department, rather than with the orange juice and such.

However, I wouldn't think that substituting orange juice would make a significant difference.
