I'm heading to Milwaukee for the weekend and I need some suggestions for breakfast. I'm a vegetarian (eggs and dairy OK) and The Boy will eat anything. One day will definitely be my beloved Beans and Barley, but for the second day I'd like to try something new. I don't mind driving out to the neighborhoods, so I'm open to any place in the city. Bascially, looking for Milwaukee's equivalent to Flying Saucer, Victory's Banner, Lula or the like. I read through some previous posts and Trocadero seems like it has a nice brunch. What else is out there?

Trocadero does have a decent brunch. It can be noisy, so if you're looking for a quiet experience, you might want to look elsewhere. Heinemann's is a classic breakfast/brunch experience. There are several locations in the Milwaukee area. Lake Park Bistro is supposed to be very nice, but pricey. You might find some ideas in this article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

My favorite breakfast in Milwaukee is a pastry from C. Adams bakery in the Milwaukee Public Market. I think Lulu Cafe in the Bay View neighborhood would fit your needs. It's a very Wicker Park-y type of place, with decent enough food and a warm staff.

I just had a nice brunch at Cafe Hollander on Downer. I like the atmospehere a lot, a bit noisy with good energy, good service and good coffee to boot. I loved my eggs benedict - perfectly cooked. The quiche, which is veggie, looked very good too. The menu does not look like it has a ton of veggie options however. Unless you count Bloody Marys which were also very tasty - with several variations, and great garnishes. Come to think of it, Trocadero has outstanding bloodys too, and a great brunch as well.

For a fancy brunch with atmosphere I have also heard the Hubbard Park Lodge is good. It is a buffet with a bunch of cold salads, shellfish, omelet and waffle stations, etc. I think its pretty spendy.

Usually the last thing I want in the morning is something sweet but a cheese Danish from C Adams would be welcome anytime (note added: I think Danishes are only offered on weekends). It's a great little bakery, well worth a visit.

A friend treated me to breakfast at Lake Park Bistro on Sunday. She had planned to take me to Le Rêve, but Sunday is the one day they're closed. Brunch at Lake Park is three courses with the price determined by the entrée you choose ($21-$37). It seemed to me well worth it, given the setting, service and quality of food.

The dining room facing Lake Michigan is large but still intimate and gets lots of natural light even on an overcast day.

The above photo is from Saturday; we stopped in before dinner service to check out the brunch menu for the following day, which is why the room is empty. On Sunday, I thought we had the best table in the house, at the window overlooking the hill on which the restaurant is perched and the lake.

    Our starters:

Macerated berries with vanilla yogurt, acacia honey and toasted granola
    Image

    Roquefort salad

    Our mains:

    Eggs Benedict

    Croque monsieur

The food overall was classic and very good. Highlights included the eggs Benedict with Dauphinoise potatoes, which were excellent. The ham was very good quality and paper thin, and the eggs had the most beautiful golden yolk. Usually with eggs Benedict, I find the cream and salt out of whack, the entire dish too heavy--not the case here. The dish seemed to levitate, everything was so light. The pillowy potatoes helped. I also thought the croque monsieur was respectable, though they could have gone a little lighter on the press/toasting. The fries at first looked pale and wimpy, but they were actually the best skinny fries I’ve ever had with unmistakable potato flavor, not at all oily, crispy and perfectly salted. Poor friend, I ate all of our fries.

We were on a tight schedule, and the Lake Park staff was very accommodating in expediting our order and packaging our desserts to go (flourless chocolate cake and angel food cake, which I didn't try). The brunch price also includes a beverage, I think coffee, OJ or a mimosa. Bread service also looked good, but we didn't partake. This certainly isn't an everyday breakfast destination, but I'd choose it again without hesitation for a special occasion.

My sister had tried to go to brunch at this same bistro a few months ago, but it was closed for a private party. She was given the recommendation to try out this spot, which isn't far from the Lake Park Bistro: The Comet Cafe.

We were in Milwaukee last weekend and we stopped here for breakfast / brunch. Very different vibe from Lake Park Bistro. Hip, loud, family friendly vibe that drew crowds out the door. It opens at 9am, we were one of the first in line and waited about 20 min for a table.

I c/p this from their website as this is a very accurate description of their offerings and tone :

Comet specializes in from-scratch comfort food and craft beers. We use fresh, seasonal ingredients that are characteristic of the Midwest and purchased from as many local businesses and purveyors as possible. Come visit us for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, drinks, homeade desserts and bacon! We also have lots of vegan and vegetarian menu options for those who only love bacon in spirit.

The bloody marys are fantastic. Created with a touch of Guinness, thai chili sauce and vodka, garnished with a ton of pickled veggies and bacon. It comes with a mini 7oz Miller bottle.

Try the bacon pancakes, french vanilla toast or the burritos.

When it comes to brunch in Milwaukee, I have 3 words - Eagan's on Water. Eagan's focus is mainly on seafood and it is fresh, outstanding seafood. Seriously, the best brunch I've had in my entire life given the price point.

    Check it out.....

McBob's in Milwaukee is a hidden breakfast gem. Serving some of the finest corned beef hash, McBob's offers excellent food at budget prices. The McGinnity includes 3 eggs over corned beef hash with a side of American fries or hash browns and a choice of toast, a scone, or an English muffin for $6.50. http://www.todaystmj4.com/features/spec ... 42852.html Play the video.

It's been a remarkable four years since this thread was "busy" so I think it's time for a few more posts. Sunday morning, I'd prefer breakfast, not brunch. Diner-ish. I'll be a little south of UWM and would prefer to stay east of 94/43. (Or, contrariwise, something not too far off 94 on the up way to Milwaukee.) Any and all suggestions happily entertained. Thanks.

Then try Miss Katie's Diner very near there. They make their own sausage links which are very good. Make sure you get those. Enjoy.

...or Benji's, Oakland Ave. just North of Capitol. It's North of UWM but not by much

The Original Pancake House on Downer in Milwaukee or Brookfield serves breakfast just like Walker Bros. Benji's for lox & bagles or hoppel poppel. Beans & Barley always has fresh, healthy breakfasts.

I'm about to leave the house, so thanks to all who helped update me on options. Still not sure. We'll just have to see where the car ends up... :D Looking forward.

Blue's Egg, a bit outside of the city, is one of my favorite places ever. The Crispy Shrimp, Bay Scallop & Calamari Scramble is my go-to and never disappoints. Despite all the remarkable breakfast joints in Chicago, I still drive out here from time to time to catch brunch. Expect a wait though. Enjoy!

Totally forgot about the Blue Egg. Nothing like having a Bloody Mary at the counter with a lox crepe.

Comet is great, but my personal favorite, and more convenient for where I stay in MKE, is Cafe Corazon in Riverwest. I usually hate spiffed-up Mexican food, but this place takes the essentials and doesn't mess with them, just does things a little more creatively. Chorizo + eggs with warm corn tortillas, great salsa and excellent bloodies.
