Just spoke with Patty at Tre Kroner. They're ready for us, and anyone who wants to kick off the meal with a little glögg tasting in the outdoor patio area should come 15 or so minutes early. (PS. apparently, there is no name in Swedish for this traditional, pre-dinner, outdoor sip. Bridgestone, can you help us out here?).

Also, for vegetarians (attn: pairs4life), Patty told me they're making some deviled eggs without arctic shrimp just for you.

This promises to be the bestest LTH holiday parties ever.

I must confess that, entertaining as it might be to see Madame Dickson engage the descendants of her ancestral adversaries, it might be a good idea to adjourn to another establishment more suited to such activities (i.e. a bar). (In all fairness, dicksond, I have always known your bride to comport herself with the utmost decorum.) However, since you raise the idea, it seems that the traditional post-feast watering hole is a bit far from Tre Kronor to work well.

Does anyone want to float suggestions for such a gathering?

We have four tickets left, and when those are sold, we can't sell any more due to space limitations at Tre Kroner. If they're sold out and you want one, you can post here and maybe someone who bought tickets and discovers they can't go will sell you theirs. We can't do refunds (we're committed to Tre Kroner to fill seats) but ticket transfers are just fine.

Josephine and Dickson, if you guys want to play Sweden invades other countries, we have Tre Kroner until midnight or so, enough time to initiate a debilitating first strike before adjouring.

In 2005, I performed a one-person survey of local waters – it seems strangely fitting that my favorite, at that time, was Santa Lucia water.

For this event, I will seek out some worthy agua (not sure where I got the Santa Lucia, so if anyone knows where to find this product, please let me know).

I wish I could be of help on the Santa Lucia front, but I appreciate the effort to bring some good water to the party. Water is my drink of choice and, although I'll drink tap water if that's all there is, I much prefer a good mineral water in most cases.

    Hi,

Stopped by Tre Kronor this evening. Tonight was their first Julbord of the year, everything looked absolutely lovely. The snow we will have tonight and tomorrow will really set the mood.

Since this snow is in excess of two-inches, I checked the signage on Foster Avenue: we need to be off the streets by 3 am.

I commented there is a tradition for some to visit a bar afterwards, Patty advised of a Swedish bar at Clark and Foster:

    Simon's Tavern
    5210 North Clark Street
    Chicago, IL 60640-2102
    (773) 878-0894
    http://www.simonstavern.com/

She said they offer a really stiff Glogg.

Simon's Tavern is located at the corner of Foster and Clark in Chicago. Fish drinking martinis, glögg, Viking paraphernalia, ancient Schlitz advertising, and Swedish roots make Simon's not only an excellent neighborhood bar but also an interesting experience for anyone that steps within its friendly environs.

Since the Depression, Simon's has indeed anchored this part of Clark Street, just north of Foster, in the Swedish enclave of Andersonville. Simon's compliments the unique character of other staple Swedish establishments, such as Wikstrom's Gourmet Foods and a satellite location of Ann Sather's, while also fitting in well with non-Swedish Andersonville newcomers like Hop Leaf, Reza's and even Starbuck's.

I don't plan to attend, though it does seem like the ideal stop after an evening virtually spent in Sweden.

Everyone at Tre Kronor is looking forward to our party tomorrow evening.

If there are any exchanges of seats for tomorrow's dinner, please advise me directly or mention it on the board. I have nametags for everyone and need to know who gave up and to whom.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Simon's is a pretty good bar with a really great sign but it also happens to be a very popular spot. So a large group trying to stop by Saturday around midnight might be disappointed.

But it certainly would be appropriate for the occasion. What kind of fish is that, wearing a horned helmet and drinking a cocktail? A pickled herring, of course.

Used to be, one could find many types of bottled mineral waters at local supermarkets and liquor stores. This morning, I've called a number of places (Jewel, Dominick's, Binny's, Famous) only to find that just about all they have is San Pelegrino and maybe one other. I bought some SP, but am looking for other, more obscure brands. If anyone knows of a good source and can pick some up for tonight, PM and we'll figure out a plan.

Lincolnwood Produce has a large (but shrinking) selection of mostly European waters just as you walk in the door. Unfortunately, I'm not able to get there before the party, but if someone else is out and about, that would be a good place to look.

This shrinking of water selection is unfortunate. Santa Lucia seems to have disappeared.

No, no, J & D, you misunderstand, the Bride insists that, despite calumnious accusations to the contrary she has no desire to attack and plunder Mittel Europe in fact or in proxy. As it happens, the Swedes do not bear ill will toward the Czechs; conversely, the Czechs have yet to forgive Sweden for the 30 years war and the plunder that still rests in Stockholm even if this did happen in 1648. I guess the wound will not heal until the treasures are repatriated.

In any case, the Bride promises not to plunder any more, at least from the Mittel Europeans. On the other hand, if there are Danes present, I may not be able to keep that peace.

Glogg, in profusion, seems the only sensible solution.
