Might be in this general area.. right around Jarvis and Greenview (near the Metra stop for Jarvis IIRC).. getting a car fixed, and thus not mobile other than on foot, for maybe 3-4 hours or so. Probably tomorrow, or maybe the day after.

Is there a place nearby especially worth stopping in for? For food, or just to spend some time (maybe reading a book)? Or even a decent bar (though its probably in the middle of the day)? I saw the cafe Charmers is nearby (which doesnt have much said on LTH), and Gruppo di Amici (which doesnt look particularly enticing to me)...A half-mile walk would be fine (though probably not much more, since it'll probably be about 6 degrees windchill again :-).. which eliminates much of my usual "RP Mexican down Clark street" stuff I think?

    Thanks!

Evanston Lunch Group™ had a good Indian meal at Luzzat. It's BYOB, but you can get a lot of good beers and wines across the street, at Taste. Or, Poitinstil isn't a bad Irish pub.

Grupo di Amici isn't bad, either.

I don't think c8w is into Indian food.

Cuetzala is within the 1/2-mile walk radius, and though I haven't been in a while, I've always enjoyed the chicken in red mole, carne asada (or carne asada tacos), and chiles rellenos. Or you could walk a few blocks south of that and see what the new incarnation of the Eternal Pupuseria (now called Cafe Frida) is like.

Jeez, just reading the menu makes me want to avoid it like the plague.

I stopped in Dagel and Beli a couple years ago. For a brief few seconds the gimmick was amusing, then it got annoying, then it got very annoying, then I left without ordering anything. I was surprised how negative my reaction was. How's the food?

I was rehearsing a play virtually nextdoor and just couldn't bring myself to even enter. But Luzzat was great.

Can't say as I am a big fan of Luzzat. Then again they may have gotten better since I posted about them in the "worst thing you have eaten lately" thread. Poitn Stihl (or however it is spelled) is a pleasant bar when they don't have some one-man band playing. The drinks are potent and cheap and the crowd is amiable. There is a "secret" bar just east of Sheridan on Chase called the Lighthouse, which is a total time warp joint. There is no name posted outside, just look for the picture of a lighthouse on the awning. Charmer's food sucks, but they rescued all of the cool vintage Art-Deco pieces from the old gay bar by the same name that used to be next door (I believe it used to be the oldest continuously run gay bar in the city). Esther, the Korean Grandma who runs the Jarvis grill, near the el tracks, is a nice lady who makes decent Bul Go Gi (the burgers ain't bad in a pinch). Cuetzala is the closest decent Mexican (check out the specials) and Park Gyros does OK with grill food. Stay far away from the Korean owned Chinese place in the same strip mall (right now the name escapes me). The best Ameri-Chinese in the hood is from China Hut on Clark. Romanian Kosher is not a restaurant, but their garlic dogs are wonderful (as well as other items). On thursdays only, they make a fantastic housemade potato salad and they make sandwiches to go. I got excited when Fulton's put in an Aquarium smoker, but since the first week they opened (when someone was teaching them how to use the smoker) they have been a real disappointment. The Mexican place that used to be El Rey del Taco (acrosss from Cafe Frida) is not that great anymore with the exception of their Bambasos, which are pretty darn good. If you venture up to Howard street, there are many more choices. Zipz makes killer Korean chicken wings and Tickie's makes good Belizean dishes (especially oxtails). Oh and Supermercado Chapala just south of Touhy on Clark makes a great grilled chicken (if you get them on the weekends or in the evenings when they are busy, which I guess cuts you out). Unfortunately, I guess that just about covers the neighborhood. My reccomendation would be to hang out at Poitn Stihl and order food (they don't care), maybe from China Hut or next door at Gruppo. You could also grab a baguette and some cheese from taste.

Oh yeah, whatever you do DO NOT order pizza from JB Alberto's (other items like burgers are OK).

Sorry, I had to echo the comment on Dagel and Beli "Pluck that Face!", for sure.

Soggy. I cannot comprehend why anyone would want to steam a bagel, but this isn't the only place that does it.

Eh, I haven't been there, just have friends in the area and I remembered it existed.
