I'm dying for a decent breakfast pastry. The Whole Foods in this neighborhood really isn't great, no interest in Starbucks, Pierrot Gourmet doesn't have them....

8-9 blocks to Fox & Obel.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

Absolutely. They have their "cinnamon swirl rolls" that are to die for. They're not cinnamon overload, but rather, they use a very rich dough. I love 'em.

There are lots of other great baked goods there too. Good croissants, some of the best muffins you'll find anywhere, excellent breads (I love the brioche loaf and also another I forget the name but it's a rustic bread with chunks of dried fruit), etc.

Yes, I realize F&O is good. I was hoping for something more like 2 blocks, as in "I can stumble over there before I even need coffee". Maybe not a sensible restriction, but a guy can dream.

Still a bit of a trek, but closer than F&O is Sarah's at 70 E. Oak for pastries in general. They open at 8 am:

At this point, I don't even bother buying a cinnamon roll unless it's Ann Sathers. I only wish they had raisins, but oh well.

    Pairs4life?
I used to like you. But this? This?
    I don't know what's worse.
The love for Ann S's cinnamon rolls, or the love of raisins in cinnamon rolls.

Just kidding, of course. To each her / his own.

Hey, I was just at the Brown Sack yesterday. How on earth can I be Seebee's girl when they don't have your product? <sigh>

To answer the original poster's question, because of this thread I ordered, because someone else did, a cinnamon roll today (still no frakking raisins) at Corner Bakery. It was pretty, pretty, pretty good. That said the calorie count is enough to make your head turn like a certain girl who made her bed levitate-- 660 calories!

A savory, non-breakfast treat about a 20-minute walk from Chicago & Michigan, but my group at Avec had this last night, which our server described as "like a cinnamon roll wrapped with chicken liver."

    Image

It was, indeed, a lovely, airy pastry rolled with a light spread of chicken liver and dotted with raisins. (Sorry, pairs4life.) Of course not a palate cleanser, but it was a delightful intermezzo of sorts between our whole foie gras and dessert of chorizo-stuffed dates. Happy food.

I can't remember having one recently but doesn't Foodlife have cinnamon rolls? They must be at least as good as the ones at Corner Bakery.

I hadn't thought to check Foodlife, thanks. Actually I'm not sure I've ever eaten there at all.
