OK men....do you think you can handle a few martinis, some "world famous" French onion soup, a prime New York strip or maybe even calves' liver?

Golden Steer is the place to do it!

We're always looking for a few good men!

Were I able to go to this event, I'd be in for the calves' liver. I used to eat it almost weekly as a kid (or so it seemed); now, almost never.

If there's enough interest we might get it as an appetizer! I love liver.

I've got five confirmed attendees so far and one "very good chance."

We've got five confirmed, maybe six. I'll buy a martini for #7. And I'll give you a bite of my liver! Who wants it?

I'm a definite maybe for this event and really hope to make it. It'll be a game time decision, though, as I have a late afternoon commitment in Highland Park.

    Thanks,

I have a work event immediately prior, so I may be late if traffic conditions aren't ideal; I'll send teatpuller an update and order on Thursday if that looks to be the case. Looking forward to steaktime.

That's no problem. We'll be expecting stragglers. I wouldn't be surprised if orders weren't placed until 8:30 or so.

The bug I've caught is getting the better of me. I'm thinking nyquil followed by two fingers of single malt is sounding better than steak and martinis tonight. Have fun.

I will be there slightly late as projected last week - should be before 8. Please just order me something (whatever moos best, maybe the Mediterranean steak?) medium-rare if orders are going in so things aren't delayed. Thanks for organizing, and to all who are attending in these cold busy days.

Thanks, Rob, for putting the evening together. Golden Steer has a lot of old school charm, which made it a very appropriate place to spend the evening. Ever since I saw it featured on Check, Please!, I'd really wanted to try it out. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little let down by the food, which definitely fell below my expectations. Still, there were a few things I'd feel good about ordering again, if I ended up there again. It was really dark in there but I managed to get a few grainy (and heavily photoshopped) pics of our meal . . .

My 2 favorite items were the liver and the hash browns, which is the exact combo I'd order if I went back. I didn't really like the steaks too much but admittedly, I'm a bit of a beef snob. The 3 steaks I tasted were relatively flavorless and cooked well beyond the requested medium-rare. Still, it was a fun night -- the company was great -- and I look forward to the next outing.

Those hash browns look killer. Not easy finding a steakhouse that does hashbrowns like that.

The onion soup looked pretty good, too. How was the broth?

Hash browns were as good as they looked -- lots of crispiness and potatoey flavor.

Onion soup broth was good but nothing special. I'm guessing they don't make it in-house but that's just a guess. The cheese atop it was on the hard side and didn't have that meltiness that I really like.

I kind of thought the smelts were the highlight. Clams weren't bad either. I wasn't quite as dissatisfied as ronnie. I thought the ribeye was pretty good and for the price, I'd give it a positive rec. Just realize this isn't Primehouse or Gibson's. But it is a fraction of the price. I'd say my liver was on par with Gene and Georgetti's and it was about half the cost ($14) if you include the gratis onion soup, salad (bad), choice of tater (good).

The dessert options are weak, to say the least. Tiramisu was not available. Cheesecake was not homemade as the menu stated. I guess for $3.25 you can't complain too much.

The scene was right out of the 50s.......the tinsel garland and retro Christmas decorations were just right.

The place was hopping. Make a reservation if you plan on going.

I think that my expectations -- and subsequent dissatisfaction with the food -- were largely based on the Check, Please! feature, in which the food all looked irresistable. In that segment, the steaks were thick, pink and juicy. Last night's steaks weren't even close, IMO. I certainly wasn't expecting 'top tier' but hoped they'd at least do the best possible cooking of what they had. I don't think that happened. As was suggested at the table last night (I forget who said it), maybe ordering a steak rare at GS would be a good way to end up with one that is medium or medium-rare.
