Cliff Doerksen, writer for the Chicago Reader and Time Out Chicago and recent winner of a Beard for his excellent Reader article on mincemeat, has died. He was a nice guy and a very talented person.

And a fellow Canadian. Sad but an impressive life.

In addition to film, mincemeat (sort of), history, northern North American macabre folk art and stories, and his family, he loved Firefly and They Might Be Giants. A great loss for both sides of the border.

Stunningly young, too. Always particularly sad to lose someone so early. Was it unexpected? Had he been sick?

Some true comfort at the memorial service earlier this month; the top two were mincemeat made according to Cliff's meticulously researched and tested recipes and were fantastic; pumpkin and lemon pies also abounded according to his wishes. One of many testaments of a brilliant guy I wish I'd known more personally.
