I was at St. Andrew's in Edgewater recently. They carry some 140 beers from all over the world ... and as I said upthread, I'm not a beer drinker. I was about to order one of my usual fallbacks -- Ace Pear Cider or a Belgian fruit lambic -- when the bartender suggested a chocolate-cherry beer from
O'Fallon. I really liked it: bitter-chocolate with a cherry undertone, not sweet. I'm not sure what somebody who
is a beer fan would think of it, but Cynthia and other no-hops folks should try it.
He also brought out a heather ale from Scotland, heather apparently being what they used before hops, and I thought that was interesting and better than regular beer but not enough to make me a fan.
St. Andrew's is a cozy little tavern with an extensive menu. The chef used to be a the late, lamented Don's Fishmarket in Skokie, and we had a wonderful plate of mussels and some good fried calamari with our beer.
