So I was at the Marion Cheese Market and saw they had jamon iberico there. MCM prices all their cheese by the quarter lb. I guess they think people think its cheaper that way. Anyway, I thought the label said $15.99 per quarter pound. So I bought half a pound. When I got to the register I was kind of surprised how much I had spent. When I looked at the receipt I realized my error. The jamon was $159 per pound! Silly me! :D

The jamon was perhaps the best cured ham I've had, but I'm not sure. Though I certainly wouldn't buy it again at that price. It practically melted in my mouth. It was more intense and definitely more funky (decomposing meat aroma?) than your average prosciutto. Oddly enough my wife didn't like it (not a fan of the genre for some reason). I ate about 1/4 lb of the stuff and frankly, I was sick of it by that point!

It is a lusciously delicious product and the one time I had it in Guadalajara, Mexico I enjoyed it immensely. Myself and the two people accompanying me all thought it was unlike any comparable meat we'd ever had. that said we paid nowhere near 159 USD a pound down there. Despite the deliciousness I don't think I could justify that price.

Rob, you didn't by any chance use the 59% Groupon coupon at MSCM?

I believe I have two of those Groupons to use (hmmm- perhaps today.)
I'll more than likely have to find an alternative to this ham since "more and intense funky decomposing meat aroma," is not high on my list of "160 bux a lb must tries."

No groupon. That would have made it a bit more "palatable."

I must admit, I'm an Iberico addict. The deep complex flavors, the luxurious fat that dissolves on your tongue...I can't live without it. Although I can't always buy a lot of it either. Many times I'll just buy a few sices at a time...maybe spending 10-15 buck a visit, it's worth it.

I wish it were cheaper...and would probably buy a leg if it came down in price. But so far, it is the king of jamon for me. I've tried a good many other jamon and prosciutto. While most are quite good and I appreciate all different levels of prosciutto only one has come very close to what (I believe) Iberico Bellota has and that was a particular duck prosciutto.

I like Iberico a lot and have bought it from time to time but that price seems higher than I've ever paid -- even for a small, pre-sliced portion. I seem to remember paying about $120/pound, even for bellota. Sounds like the groupon would be a great way to go when purchasing Iberico at MSCM.

Is there anywhere else in Chicago where I can find Iberico ham? I live on the north side, and Marion Cheese Market is a bit of a drive for me, especially when I know I'll be purchasing $150 a lb ham.

Try calling the 694 Wine & Spirits, the place formerly known as Juicy Wine Company. I haven't been there since they changed ownership and so I don't know if they still have a retail section or if they have Jamon Iberico.

El Quercia is producing an excellent variation on Iberico jamon. you can purchase an irregular piece for $50 +shipping, the price used to include shipping but that has changed. Certainly not as elegant as a whole leg of Iberico and you have to slice it yourself but very tasty at a fraction of the price. Note, its called prosciutto but its really not like the standard brands on the market and more akin to Serrano and Iberico.-Dick

Costco carries Iberico on and off. I believe it's $30 for 4 ounces, so if it's a guilty pleasure then a membership may be worth it.

Picked up some Pata Negra Iberico Ham from Schaefer's on Saturday morning. $89.99lb but soooooo delicious !

Also picked up some Epoisses cheese from Burgundy region of France. Looking forward to opening that in a couple weeks.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

I *love* stinky cheese, I really really do. So, end of last year, I got an Epoisses from Murray's in NYC, just to see. My limits were tested, my wife and neighbors' limits were surpassed.

Still and all, the taste and gooey texture were simply unbeatable. Sweet Willie, please do report back on your Epoisses experience!

BTW, I took a continuing ed course in natural cheesemaking from David Asher. I now know how to make my very own stinky cheese. Highly recommended, if that's your sort of thing. : )

I actually enjoy eating it, my tolerance for being around it is waning. On a visit to the Burgundy region of France a few years back we had a wonderful meal and the waiter brought the cheese cart over for dessert. The cheeses were nicely displayed and there was a nice box in the middle. He opened the box to present the Epoisses and I selected that along with a few others. At one point I asked how he felt being around the Epoisses constantly to which he replied "why do you think I have the box?"
