I'm visiting my sister and BIL in D.C. and we stumbled upon this injera at Dama Ethiopian restaurant in Arlington, VA. The promises on the label were so enticing that we had to purchase it.

Alas, it did not live up to the label. It shared with sand both it's taste and texture and the only compulsion we felt upon sampling it was to give it the old heave ho.

1.5 lbs of Jewel Deli's "Deviled Egg Potato Salad."
My own fault for craving deviled eggs at the moment, and walking into Jewel with an appetite and very limited time until Jr had a hunger meltdown himself. I saw their fried chicken coming fresh out of the fryer, and remembered that at a party a few years ago up in Lake Zurich somewhere, one of the offerings was Jewel fried chicken, and after severeal cocktails, I thought it was absolutely delicious. So, I bought some fried chicken, and decided on "Deviled Egg Potato Salad" as a side dish. The chicken was better than I expected it to be, but this potato salad... I swear I'm starting to think I'm crazy by thinking that mayo based salads should not be sweeter than ice cream. Am I nuts or what? Who eats this stuff? It was like a potato, onion, egg and mustard dessert. Loaded with sugar. Sitting in the fridge here if anyone wants it.

I ABHOR Jewel and their waaayy overpriced deli CRAP!! 7.29/lb. for GD bologna!!!! I truly feel sorry for anyone who even ENTERS that godforsaken understaffed HELLHOLE !!!!!! p.s. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !

Evil Ronnie and I went for a late lunch/early dinner around 430 today to Cafe Central. Big mistake. The pork chops were so dry, to swallow even one bit I had to have a sip of water. Tasteless and dry yellow rice with pidgeon peas. ER had patitas with the same nasty rice. Best thing we ate: sweet fried plantains.

My goat cheese was no longer edible, so I had to forgo a snack of it on top of crispbread crackers or start gnawing on my cubicle walls. The only healthy-looking thing in the office's Wheel of Fortune* vending machine was a Deluxe Chef's Salad. I'm not sure what made it deluxe. The ham and turkey was as expected and the tomato was actually pretty decent. But the cheese was solidified into a wet, congealed mass, and the lettuce was mostly a soggy extension of it, with that odd, faintly vintage smell of greens that spent one day too long in the fridge. I picked out the meat, egg and tomato and dumped the rest. Worst $2.75 I ever spent. Guess it's plain crackers for me. :(

Mr. Pie made me an egg nog with rum in it the other day. Don't tell. Somehow it did not mix well and was pretty nasty, but I drank it anyway.

Having attended the Antonius School of Bolognese (still need to defend), I found this barbaric version to be particularly offensive, easily one of the worst things I've eaten lately, as in the last decade, complete with a heavy drizzle of sickly sweet balsamic syrup, found not only along the perimeter of the plate but permeating the sauce, just a totally disgusting, deplorable mess of a dish. No, SRSLY.

I shattered my French press carafe in the sink yesterday, so today I tried using the instant coffee that I usually reserve for baking purposes. This was a poor decision.

We had a lunch catered for work from there a few months ago and outside of a couple of Chinese places it was some of the worst catered food I've ever had, burnt off tasting dry meat along with a nice upset digestive system later in the afternoon. :x

Spaghetti and Meatballs at Anna Maria Pasteria

I'd eaten there a few times when it moved to my neighborhood a few years ago, and found it to be an adequate neighborhood restaurant good in a pinch. I haven't been back for a couple of years, and got some spaghetti and meatballs takeout last week. Utterly disgusting. Mushy, overcooked spaghetti in an overly-salty, acidic marinara sauce. And that was the good part. The meatballs (two small ones) were like poor-tasting rubber. And, I had the privilege of paying 30 bucks for two orders of this to go. I'll never go back.

The penne pasta at Briejo in Oak Park. Or maybe the dessert cookie that closed the meal. By and large, I tend to like Briejo, but the other night something was off. The appetizers were good. My pan fried grouper over israeli couscous with olives and calamari was decent but could have been amazing. The grouper was perfectly seasoned and cooked, an amazing piece of fish, but the couscous it was served on left a watery watery mess of the plate and the calamari was chewy, I thought it would have been better served grill then plated with the dish as opposed to cooked with the couscous. Still the fish made up for the poorly executed starch. My daughters pasta was unforgivable. Again, too much water present in the sauce, but the onions were not properly cooked and the flavors were all off. We would have been so much happier with prego and some freshly graded Parmesan. The freshly baked cookie was incredulous. I think they mistakenly used baking soda instead of flour in making this cookie. Or maybe after I mentioned to the waiter my displeasure about the couscous, the chef thought this surprise would be amusing, I don't know. Anyway, I wasn't amused.

The Chicken Mole Enchilada at Fonda Isabel on Roosevelt Road in Oak Brook Terrace.

Tasted like watered down hershey's chocolate sauce. Very unappealing.

It's fairly nice place to sit. Sat next to a large window and watched the beautiful sunset with a good Margarita and a nicely varied selection of four salsas and chips.

But once the entrees came - it went downhill fast. The rest of it wasn't that good, but the Mole was particularly bad.

    Nice snotty comment.

Actually, after consuming part of the dish, I took the chicken and some of the potatoes off that plate and put them on a plate which was not covered in grease in an effort to make it all more palatable.

I hope as a 'chef' you don't produce similarly unappealing dishes.

As a side note, other dishes consumed at our table were nicely prepared and tasty; about the overall experience I might post, time and inspiration permitting. But the dish above really stood out in a negative way...
