I've got a Mexican-themed menu for dinner guest tomorrow night and am stumped on dessert (largely due to the fact that I don't care for sweets and don't want to make anything). Would Dorado do a carryout flan. Would that even keep if I picked it up and put it immediately in the fridge? Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

La Baguette Panaderia (5712 N. Clark St., Chicago, 773-878-8556)

Flan, tres leches, and more. Good, not great. Though I do like the 3 leche as much as the dryish and muy caro version at BomBon.

I've gotten carryout flan at La Unica on Devon that kept well and was quite tasty.

For a light dessert after Mexican. I'll often serve mango and lime and coconut sorbets. There are some good ones at Whole Foods.

Thanks for the tips. I picked up some tres leches at La Baguette. I tried some (you know, just to make sure it wasn't poisonous) and it was nice. They also had some really good bread pudding as a sample in the bakery.

this is after the fact but if you're ever in the bind again and it's summer and you want something light and simple, Mexicans have their own version of a strawberry short cake (in the areas outside Guanajuato you'll often see roadside stands selling "fresas y crema" strawberries & cream). Go to a panaderia and buy the little plain looking sweet muffins, these are a sort of pound cake (although I doubt made with butter but dense and sweet). For each person, take a "muffin", pull the paper wrapper off it, cut it half and lay it at the bottom of a small bowl. Toss hulled strawberries with a tablespoon full of sugar and a teaspoon of water in mixing bowel to create a teentsy bit of syrup. Spoon a heap pf strawberries over the split muffin and top it with a nice plop of fresh whipped cream. That's simple, that's summer and that is a Mexican dessert.
