I've been commissioned to find my stepmother some kid goat, specifically "1 3-pound cabrito hindquarter" for barbecuing. Anyone know a good place to get this?

SunView market in Niles often has goat available on Fridays. You could ask the butcher there to save you some. I imagine one of the Indo-Pak butchers on Devon would have it also.

    Geli,

I happened to stop in Nea Agora on Taylor yesterday and they have* 15-lb goats for $3.79 per lb. They sell quarters as well as whole goats, but I did not inquire as to the price differential, if any.

20-25 lb pigs were going for $1.85 per lb. They have lamb, as well spring lamb with advance notice, but I did not catch the pricing on lamb.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I'm certain most ethnic grocers will order it for you, if they don't have it on hand. Produce World in Morton Grove, where I've always gotten my goat, doesn't have it on hand, but they never have any problem getting it for me. So if you have a reliable Middle Eastern/Eastern European or Mexican grocer nearby, give them a call.

Has anybody purchased a whole cabrito in Chicago and where? How much? I live in the city and don't really want to drive to the 'burbs. I am flexible though...

    Thanks!

I'd recommend calling ethnic grocery stores that have butchers. That's what I did (though in the suburbs, so the places I discovered won't help you). Hispanic, Eastern European, Pakistani, and Indian grocers are probably your best bet, but you might find that any good butcher has a source that can get him a goat.

I've gotten goats (both young and old) from Sahar II and I'm pretty sure they keep them stocked all the time. Cabrito should be very easy to find in the city, some other places worth calling would be Ciales (2141 W Armitage Ave), Peoria Packing (1300 W Lake St), and Chicago Meat Market (3021 N Cicero Ave).

Fresh Farms in Niles had big posters in their front window over the holidays touting availability of halal lamb and goat.

Where did you find sources in the NW suburbs?

Posters are still up as of this past Saturday. (Right next to the posters advertising glatt kosher beef - I love that place!)
