Looking for Restaurant w party room on North Side
A friend wants to throw a b-day party for around 40 with a nice dinner.
Prefers BYOB to bring his own wines and keep within budget.
Would love to hear your recommendations.
    Many thanks for your help,
    Berns

    UPDATED 5/15/2011:
Thanks for all the good suggestions. We settled on using the party room at STELLA'S DINER,
    3042 N Broadway St, Chicago IL60657
    Phone: (773) 472-9040
Don’t be put off by ‘Diner.’ While they run a busy breakfast and lunch diner, the dinner crowd is different. It’s BYOB.
We had 34 guests, brought in 2 cases of wine and a fancy birthday cake, (House of Fine Chocolates across the street) had the party room to ourselves. Decorated the tables and windows, had our own music and TV monitor for a slide show and had a super evening.
Gus, the owner, charged regular menu prices for below items from their dinner menu and the food was first rate and delicious.
Each table had a mini menu of below items, so guests could order. Since we used Evite for the invitations, we had ‘polled’ (an evite feature) the guests ahead of time to give the chef an approximate count of preferred entrees. Below are listed in order of preference by the guests.

BLUE CHEESE CRUSTED SKIRT STEAK 16.95
    SALMON TERIYAKI 14.50
CHICKEN BREAST W CREAMED MUSHROOMS, SPINACH ETC 12.25
    VEGETARIAN: PORTOBELLO PASTA 12.25

This came out to be a reasonably priced affair and we all left very happy. Berns

I had my birthday party for about 40 people a few years ago at Pho 888 on Argyle. The owners were very happy to accomodate us and let us "reserve" the entire place without so much as asking for a deposit or for us to commit to a minimum per-head order amount or set menu. We ended up bringing tons of booze, everyone ordered what they wanted, and we had a great time.

With that number of people, you should seriously consider Kendall College. I did my 50th birthday dinner there and have done a few events there for the International Wine & Food Society. As the top culinary school in the area, the food and service has always been top notch. I've always been able to negotiate a corkage of $5 per person for the IWFS dinners, and they waived it for my birthday dinner. With 40 people in your party, they'll definitely work with you. They have a fabulous room on the 4th floor that will hold your party just fine. If you want to pursue that option, send me a message back channel and I'll give you some names and contact information.

Here's a link to the photos from a Madeira dinner I did there in late 2009. This is the same room I referenced above.

How far north would you be willing to go? Do you have a neighboorhood or willing to go into the Northern suburbs?

4 places that come to mind on the North side of Chicago are Cafe Marebella on Milwaukee avenue in Jefferson park. BYOB, and I have seen where they sectioned off 1/2 of the restaurant for private parties. They are a tapas place, average tapas and reasonably priced.

The other is GNR winner Smak Tac for Polish on Elston Avenue, also in Jefferson/Norwood Park. I have seen where they closed the entire place for a private party. I think that you would be able to seat all 40 here.

I haven't seen this, but would be interesting if she could, but Deta's Cafe on Ridge in Rogers Park. Great food, I think that it is BYOB (?..someone confirm?) and could be a very fun and different place to have a party.

Sun Wah in Uptown is very reasonably priced and I believe they still let you bring in wine. Not a private room, but they have served large parties like yours, with roasted pigs, peking duck presentations etc etc.,

Yes, Deta's is BYOB, and I've had her cater for a group of nearly 40. But it might be a challenge to get 40 people into her little space.

We did a BYOB dinner for 25-30 at Semirami's for my wife's birthday and loved it. I think they should be able to handle 40 with some notice. Plenty options for the odd vegetarian or vegan, and it's very inexpensive as well.

I'm not certain of Sun Wah's BYOB status, but other than that I definitely can second that recommendation.
