What was Artemis, at Golf & Busse in Mt. Prospect, now has a sign outside announcing the forthcoming Black Cow, steaks, seafood and chops. Looks like they've given the facade a facelift, too.

Wow. That's one of those places you just took for granted would be there until the day you died and then some. I wouldn't be surprised if it got torn down and some gaudy riverfront condo development went up in its place.

I doubt that. First there is very little land space there and second, Geneva is very very protective of it's river front property and historic buildings.

Chicken Planet, Lai Lai Chinese, Korean Express and La Cocina all located in the first block of Jackson Blvd west of State St will be displaced by The John Marshall Law School which has bought the building.

Chicken Planet has always been one of my favorites and stopping by on Friday and talking to the owner he mentioned he has negotiated with the owners to have them honor his lease and allow him to remain at this location for another 6 to 7 months.

He is not standing still though and is opening another location a few blocks away at 177 W Van Buren in a month or so.

Both Jake's Pizza and Gino's East on Washington St. in Naperville are closed. The former with a sign that "Tutti's Pizza" is coming soon (although the city permit had it spelled "Tittu's" or something). I didn't get that close to the former Gino's building, but it looks like it's going to be a sports bar. BBQ pizza from Jake's will be missed, but that Gino's location never impressed me.

Noticed some changes at the corner of Chicago and Paulina this evening:

A twofer: the tiny little hot dog shop Skippy's Red Hots is now "De Pasada" (opened today, I think). I'm not sure what used to occupy the space next door, but it's now "Mr. Taco." Mr. Taco was having a private event this evening but, if memory serves, they open for real on the 27th.

    Image

Around the corner on Paulina is something called Carbón Live Fire Mexican Grill. Peeked in the window and it looks like it has a ways to go. Might possibly be another outpost of a restaurant apparently on 26th St.

Here's a close-up of the sign at the new Mr Taco's Restaurant. Is this the same restaurant as the one that is/was almost around the corner on Marshfield a few doors north of Chicago?

I'm pretty sure that the Carbo Livre on Marshfield is in the space where Mr. Taco used to be and hasn't opened yet. The first sighting in that other thread was from this month. Nice to see more movement on Chicago Ave.

Cobbler, pie shop opens in Chicago Heights
CHICAGO HEIGHTS | When Bloom High School graduate Bonnie Thompson saw the strip mall come up next to the popular Egg & I restaurant on Dixie Highway, she decided it was time to follow her dream.

Thompson's new bakery, Classic Cobbler, recently opened in that strip mall at 200 Dixie Highway.

She worked for years as a mental health counselor, but was accustomed to people asking that she bake for their parties. Thompson decided to market her family recipes by opening a shop that specializes in a variety of fruit cobblers, pies and specialty cakes.
"Even when we hire people, they will have to learn how to make the pies, but they will never make the crust," Thompson said.

Real shame. Zaiqa put out some mean, greezy, fiery food in some of the most hardscrabble digs I've ever seen. Will be missed.

Eater reported that "Taco Joint" at 1969 N. Halsted (formerly Minnie's) had opened. A web search showed they open at 11:30am on Saturday, so I went. And the doors were locked. Tried again at noon and still not open, so I went to Old Town Social and had a really good bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. Checked again at 1:45 pm and the lights were on, but the chairs were still up on the tables and the doors locked. Perhaps I'll try again next week, but I'm not gonna pump quarters in to parking meters to find out if they are open.

While in the neighborhood I saw a new place called "Brother's Beef" at the corner of Armitage and Burling (formerly the pun-ily named Doggie Diner) is hiring. Opening date is scheduled for early spring.

Surprised it's not at Moody Bible Institute but at least they can still be closed on Sundays and not have people wonder why.

Aurora's Historic Roudhouse, formerly know as Walter Payton's Roundhouse, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They owe just about everybody back taxes, payments to vendors and several million to the Payton family who pulled all of Payton's football memorabilia out last fall.

I'm surprised the place has made it this long. The best thing about it was the restored building, which undoubtedly ate up millions of startup capital and eats up more than its fair share of operating revenue. The food is mediocre, the beer is mediocre, and once the novelty of the Payton angle wore off, there wasn't much else going for it. And its location isn't particularly ideal either. I have my doubts about how long it will last after it emerges from bankruptcy.
