I'm throwing a Porkapalooza Party at my house where every dish has to have a pork product in it.

So while researching drinks to make I found 3 beers that people have said taste bacony.

Just wanted to know if anyone has tried them. They are.....

    Great Divide Smoked Baltic Porter

    Mikkeller Rauch Geek Breakfast

    Summit Unchained Scottish Style Ale

I haven't had any of those, but this beer from New Holland was pretty smoky and went well with pork.

Just a warning, the Mikkeller is likely to be pretty expensive since a lot of their beers retail for around $5/12 oz. bottle (or maybe $10 for the 500 ml of the one you listed).

I'm not sure when exactly but I think Three Floyds will be tapping Ham On Rye soon(ish). You would have to travel down to Munster and pick up a growler but it's supposed to be one of the meatiest beers around.

I will agree the Charkoota Rye is like bacon in a glass. Not sure how widely available it is but I do have some.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbiers can be found at many Binny's. Although I get more of a ham flavor from them than bacon.

Rauchbiers are a German lager style of beer that tasted like smoke.

This is probably the best known of the style: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/263/1324

I certainly wouldn't consider the Great Divide or Summit beers to be bacon beers. I would stick with American smoked beers or Rauchbiers.

The Rauchbiers of Bamberg Germany have been known for their bacony flavored smoked beers since the 15th century. The most famous and obtainable brand is "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" which dates back to 1654 (carried by binny's). Shelton Brothers importers, known for importing exceptional and hard to find brews carries another brand called Spezial Rauchbier, which comes from the oldest continuously operating brewery in Bamberg (since 1536). West Lakeview liquors has a special relationship with Shelton Brothers, and may be able to order this brand (although it is a little lighter on the smoke than Aecht Schenkerla). Shiner (of Texas) makes a domestic (and cheaper) Rauchbier bock (also available at Binny's). I have not tried the Shiner's beer, but I can attest to the bacon-like flavor of the Aecht rauchbier. In fact, my friends and I have been calling this brew "bacon beer" for many years.

Per FFF's twitter feed, the Ham-on-Rye just went on tap. I don't know how much a growler would cost but it's probably reasonable. Not sure if you've already hosted the event, but if not, the growler (still sealed) should last you a while in a fridge.

I had to register just to second the Schlenkerla Rauchbier.

I've had most of the beers mentioned in this thread and that one is easily the best 'smoke beer' with bacon flavor.

    Good luck!

Bear in mind there are multiple variations of Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier available in bottle and on tap. Binny's willl almost always have the Weizen, Marzen, and Urbock available in bottles. I would rank them in the order above from Very smokey -> Campfire. The weizen is obviously a wheat beer made with rauch malt, the marzen is similar to an Oktoberfest style, while the Urbock is closer to a heavily malty doppelbock. More malt = more smoke.

Less commonly available are the Lentbeer and Oak Smoke. The Oak Smoke is barrel aged and the strongest of all. I have seen bottles of the Oak Smoke, but not often. It and the Lentbeer are available on tap from time to time as well, but in small quantities.

Lastly, their lager is really nice, it is not brewed with smoked malt but acquires a hint of smoke from being brewed in proximity to the smoked beers and is really good. I've seen this in bottle and on tap.
