I'm looking for a place to purchase a quality Molcajete (Mexican mortar and pestle) as well as a tortilla press. Any recommendations, especially near downtown? Thanks.

Not very close to downtown, but I bought my molecajete at Supermercado Chapala in Rogers Park. It is pretty heavy duty, and I have been very happy with it. It looks like solid volcanic stone, but it might be actually cast from some sort of concrete-like compound. I bought it over a year ago, but I would imagine they still sell them. They also sell both aluminum and wooden tortilla presses.

Bought mine from Adobe Grill in Old Town years ago. They apparently still sell them but I don't know if you can get them directly from the restaurant anymore.

Coming to you from Leiper's Fork, TN where we prefer forking to spooning.

The always-exotic Crate and Barrel sells authentic molcajetes:

If you can wait until Sunday, you'll have a huge choice of really authentic Mexican cookware (and tube socks) at the Maxwell Street Market. In particular, there's a vendor at one of the cross streets near the highway...it might be at Taylor or at Polk, not sure, that has all the metalware as well.
