For those who didn't get in to Grant Achatz's book release party tonight at the Thomas Masters Gallery (or who are looking for a more economical way to see him close to home), I just received the following in my inbox. I understand that tickets are still available but selling fast. For what it's worth, the Masters event tonight is $75, so the Milwaukee event seems like a bargain at $25. Thought it was worth spreading the word:

    To Christy,

Did you know that Chef Grant Achatz and his business partner Nick Kokonas are coming to speak for a ticketed event at Milwaukee's Boswell Book Company on Sunday, March 13, 7 pm? It's all timed to the release of their new joint memoir, Life, on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat.

This is the passionate story of a man totally driven by food, ever since he worked at his family's restaurant in small-town Michigan. It discusses his first mentor, his father, through the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, the short stint at Charlie Trotter's, life as a winemaker, and two influential stints at The French Laundry under Thomas Keller. His quest to control his own kitchen led him to Evanston's Trio, finding himself filling the shoes of Rick Tramonto and Gale Gand.

And it's a chance encounter with Nick Kokonas, a man with money, smarts, and passion, that led him to build Alinea, named the best restaurant in America by both Gourmet Magazine and the San Pellegrino list. It was also named the best restaurant in Chicago ever!

Life, on the Line is up there with some of the best food narratives I've ever read, from Kitchen Confidential to Tender at the Bone. And like Danny Meyer's Setting the Table, he, along with his partner Kokonas, detail what went into creating Chicago's famed Alinea.

And on top of that, he discusses his bout with tongue cancer, overcoming amazing odds to become, while not quite cancer free, in remission.

Our talk is Sunday, March 13, 7 pm, at Boswell Book Company, 2559 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee, Wisconsin. $25 will get you admission, and a signed copy of Life, On the Line (list price of the book is $27.50). Going as a group and don't need multiple copies of the book? You can also get a $20 gift card to Boswell, good for anything in the store. That makes admission a reasonable $5.

If you are planning to go, buy your tickets now at our website, as this event may sell out.
