My wife and I are bowling in a monthly league at Stardust lanes in Addison. On our way there we take Lake St. and noticed that are a bunch of taquerias along the way. It doesn't look like there is much of anything about them on the board, so I figured we would try a different one each time and put together a report on each one.

Tonight was the first one, Taqueria Los Tres Potrillos. Big signs in the windows for Carnitas Don Pancho (I thought I had read about them on here in the past, but turns out it was Don Pedro). Menu is all of the basics of a taqueria: tacos, tortas, burritos and gorditas. They also have soups: menudo, pozole, caldo de res, caldo de pescado or camarones.

They bring a nice selection of pickled carrots, jicama and jalapeños, as well as some chips and salsa.

My basic order, first time at any tacqueria is some steak tacos and then with the carnitas sign I had to order a couple of those as well. A couple of bottles of salsas, one green and one red. Both were very thin and kind of bland. No heat in either of them.

Carnitas, some pieces were really good, rich and flavorful, while others were dried out.

Carne asada was disappointing. Griddle cooked, didn't see it being cooked but wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't just warmed up from a bucket.

I grabbed a take out menu after we ordered and on the way to our table I saw that it had a picture of a full trompo on the back. I quickly did a double take behind the counter to see if the pastor was on a trompo. Unfortunately, the trompo was empty and didn't really look like it was being used. The flames were on, but everything was clean around it with no pastor in sight. Not sure if they had just run out for the day or they use it to cook pastor early in the day and then cut it all off for later use.

My wife was feeling pretty gringo-esque tonight and order a chimichanga with pastor. I examined a few pieces of the pastor and it did look like it could have come from a trompo at some point. It had some nice crispy edge. It wasn't the usual mushy, sauced up pastor you get at a lot of places.

Nothing I ate here knocked me off my feet, but if they do actually cook pastor on the spit it has potential to be a solid spot.

Unfortunately, I've failed at this. There's 2 months of bowling left. Hopefully I can hit some of the other places up.
