It’s official: the Subway sandwich chain has surpassed Oak Brook-based McDonald’s Corp. as the world’s largest restaurant chain, in terms of units. http://chicagobreakingbusiness.com/2011 ... chain.html

Reminds me of a quote from a frustrated friend while looking for a location for his restaurant- "Everyone around here wants a damn five dollar footlong!"

Not I. I'd be very happy to have the 6" hard-crusted skinny rolls with a sliver of cheese and jamon I found in Barcelona's fast food delis. Half the food, half the calories, twice the flavor and satisfaction.

    HI,

You can fit a Subway shop practically into a closet of a shop. There is far more infrastructure, real estate and employment from a McDonald's operation as well as far more revenue.

I think Subway cannot begin to approach McDonald's gross sales number. That's the number I would be impressed by.

Subway is the cheapest of the franchises in terms of buy-in and they offer no territorial protection for the franchisee, so if another mope wants to open one across the street, they're okay with that. This is why you can stand on nearly any corner in the Loop and be a few hundred feet from a Subway in nearly any direction. Profits per location end up being low relative to other franchises (you can make over $1million from a good McDonalds location, maybe a tenth of that at a great Subway).

And there's nothing sadder than walking down a medieval lane in Europe and happening upon a Subway. I'd gladly take a European McDonalds, at least they try to build a presentable location.

The TV news tonight I watched said McDonalds has 24 billion dollars in sales to Subway's 15 billion dollars.
