I recently read about spekuloos spread being the "best condiment of 2010" and "10x better than Nutella." Being a fan of both peanut butter and Nutella, I had to check this out for myself. When I arrived in NYC, I started following the waffletruck on twitter. We were in the East Village, so we circled around and around Astor Place looking for their Goesting Cart. I tweeted them for more specifics but never heard back. Determined to try spekuloos, we cabbed it to their truck parked at 7th and Christopher. I preferred light & crispy (brussels), while my friend preferred soft & chewy (liege). We ordered one of each, both to be topped with the spekuloos spread. Sadly, the spekuloos spread just didn't live up to the hype and my heightened expectations from my determination and hunt. It was very thick and sticky, like natural peanut butter but not grainy. The spread is described as being reminiscent of Belgian gingerbread cinnamon cookies. I found the spices to be on the subtle side compared to the peanut in pb or the hazelnuts in Nutella. The wafels exactly as described. From what I could see, I think the Brussels wafel was a yeast based batter, and it was perfectly light and airy on the inside w/a nice crispy exterior. Being soft and chewy, the Liege wafel was notably heavier in texture when eaten side by side w/the Brussels wafel.
They sell 14oz jars from the truck for $7. I enjoyed the spread on the waffles, but in the end, I decided that it wasn't worth checking in my luggage for the flight home. I love waffles, but I just don't make them at home often enough. I think the spread would be a nice alternative to peanut butter on toast, pancakes, crepes, fruit, etc.
