Can you suggest places for dinner this Sat night for 2 couples to dine in Chicago? Mid 30s, enthusiastic about food although 2 are veg/fish eaters only. Would like to try someplace that has a festive atmosphere that isn't too expensive. Festive - meaning not half empty (was going to try Chizakaya, but heard that it is often half empty and not a great vibe, although food is yummy). Not insanely loud music so we can't talk since we haven't seen each other recently and want to catch up. Then we plan to get drinks somewhere, but I suppose I can do that search on my own. Nothing too refined (Blackbird, Sepia both of which I love) but also not a loud atmosphere (Carnivale) - and not too expensive. Was recently at Girl and the Goat - loved the vibe but found it incredibly salty. Both visits. Publican would be a good suggestion but not good for the veg folks. Help! I dropped the ball on this one.

I've not been to Chizakaya on a Saturday night yet but have been on several Fridays and never witnessed a half empty room so I wouldn't let that be a deterrent. Other possible options--Owen & Engine, the Bristol, Purple Pig, Maude's, or Sable. All are good spots for eating (including plenty of veg/pesc options) and drinking but if you wanted to venture on to another spot, the Whistler is great for wonderfully priced and uniquely delicious craft cocktails. All of these places have threads describing them if you use the search function. And all will provide you with plenty of activity--perhaps more than you wish for since packed houses can equal long wait times. Have fun and report back!

My one visit to Chizakaya was on a Friday night and describing the room as half empty would have been generous. Of course, this was only one visit, YMMV.

    - I don't usually think of Owen & Engine and the Bristol as festive, but if they count, then Balsan should, too.
    - Lure Izakaya - It's new, so people are just finding their way there (i.e. may not be packed on Saturday night) but definitely festive.

Just had a great dinner at Mercat a la Planxa. I think it would fit the bill.
