I just had lunch at Del Seoul -- shrimp banh mi--and in walking back to my car it struck me how diverse and generally tasty that short block on Clark is between Wrightwood and Deming. There are at least five places that are visit-worthy: Del Seoul, Lito's Empanadas, Frances Deli, Luigi's Pizza and Aloha Hawaiian. While none of these places is a first-tier favorite of mine, they are all respectable and, each in their own way, enjoyable.

Any other blocks in the city or suburbs with comparable culinary density? (Stretches of Devon certainly do come to mind...)

It's actually Clark St., but your right. Dining in the neighborhood has improved significantly over the last 10 years or so that I've been living there. Expand the geography north a bit and you get to places like Pastoral and Crisp (those are on Broadway).

Man, a lot has changed, in many ways, since I though the 3100 block of Central was the best chow block in town. I will say that I do greatly enjoy Central Gyro's on that block still.

Dr. K, thanks for bringing this up for me!

We wanted to check out Grota, but they are only in the banquet business now. Went to Starapolska around the corner instead and enjoyed the buffet there. Light, chewy mushroom potato dumplings, vinegary vegetable salad, smoked ham, potato pancakes, pork schnitzel were all big hits.

I should add, the Polish place kinda across from where Grota is, Balakan or something is a very good place. Just not a buffet.

Yes, Barbakan across the street is very good. Very good pierogie, potato pancakes and soups.
