Evanston Lunch Group™ Central St. Happening, April 27 @12:30

The Evanston Lunch Group™ visited Prairie Joe’s Restaurant on Central Street in Evanston six years ago. The world, and even Central Street, has changed since 2005. We are wondering whether Prairie Joe’s eccentric diner has changed too and hope that you will join the ELG there for lunch to be followed by a small tour of The Spice House courtesy of LTHer and The Spice House owner, Cinnamon Girl.

The main thread on Prairie Joe’s notes its good food, eclectic menu, and display of artwork. Its coconut-chocolate milkshake and unique décor have been praised by sundevilpeg.

GNR The Spice House is treasured by many LTHers. If you have only done business with them by mail, you are missing the wonderful experience of breathing in the delicious aromas in their Central Street store. The Spice House’s Old Town neighbor, Old Town Oil, is moving to 1924 Central Street. If the store is open by April 27th, we can have a triple-ELG event.

About how long do these luncheons typically go? I don't normally go to lunch until later but I would love to meet up with you folks wherever you may be at that time.

Length depends on where we go . But in this case, I would think we would finish at Prairie Joe within the hour and then head over to The Spice House. If you come, maybe nr706 will give you an ELG membership card.

We will be there. We may be a little late, since I teach until noon and then have to loop back to pick up Catherine.

All is lined up for a personalized tour with Cinnamon Girl at The Spice House after a good lunch at Prairie Joe's tomorrow! Unfortunately Old Town Oil is not yet open. There's still plenty of room for more folks.

A last-minute work snafu means I'm going to be forced to miss today's lunch and tour. I had really been looking forward to this, especially as I have never made it to Prairie Joe's.... Have fun!

The ELG had a pleasant lunch in the back room of Prairie Joe’s, which remains as funky as ever. I enjoyed my “Greek BLT” (a special), which had a nice olive-flecked mayo on Greek white bread to make it “Greek.” The feta-flavored fries with a bit of lemon and olive oil dressing weren’t at the Cross Rhodes level, but they were good. I only had tiny tastes of others’ dishes, so I will let them comment for themselves. The highlight of the day was our little tour of The Spice House, conducted by owners Tom and Patty Erd. It was great to see the grinding and sifting machines behind the scenes, and Patty and Tom’s enthusiasm and knowledge were a pleasure to witness. We also tasted and sniffed and poked around. I think my jacket still carries a faint aroma of delicious spices. Thanks so much to Patty and Tom for their generosity!

According to the Daily Northwestern, Old Town Oil will open in about 2 weeks. Central Street is turning into a nice destination for food shopping.
