Where can one find real cream (plain) scones - not the ones with fruit, flavorings - just real honest-to-god scones?

They do have them sometimes at Whole foods but they are not very good. Scones don't keep very well like biscuits. Mostly if you like them you have to make them at home to get a good scone. They also have scones at Starbucks at times. I don't think any of these are plain.

I would bet that the scones at the places that serve afternoon tea are pretty traditional. I'm vaguely remembering this from the one time I had tea at the Drake.

The Drake's scones are pretty poor actually.

Give a call to the Pierrot Gourmet at the Penninsula. The make some pretty good morning bakery items.

Blair at Alchemy Coffee house in Wilmette makes the best scones I have ever had. I know he sells unbaked scone wheels and perhaps if you wanted to place a special order he would make you a plain wheel. Can't promise anything, but it couldn't hurt to try.
