So, I'm still a-workin' on my trip from Newark, NJ to Lawrenceville, NJ. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm leaning towards Jimmy Buff's Italian hot dogs, but I'm still not fully decided. Besides, I imagine I can squeeze in more than a few chow-its in the 2 days I'm there.

In some research, I came across this Harold's New York Deli in Edison, NJ. It's gotten good reports, and has about my two favorite words: pickle bar. It does not, however, seem at all feasible for a party of one. The sandwiches are huge, and not huge-huge, but huge as it meant for 5 or more. Really. What I might still do for the pickles, but it seems like a big waste of food, which offends my sustainable side.

Anyone been here, and especially, can anyone speak of a solo meal here.

    Thanks

(And any NJ tips still appreciated.)

I don't have anything to add to what you already know. The sandwiches are comically huge. I haven't been to Harold's in forever, but I do remember liking it.

Aw, come on Vital, you can do it! Click here for Michael Stern's review and a couple rather amazing pictures (don't ignore the matzoh ball).

My brain cannot process enough electrical stimulation to coherently surmise how much I enjoy Harold's. It is perhaps the best deli I have been to. The "sandwiches", if we must call them this, are really deli platters. The bread speared on both ends of the pile of meat redefine perfunctory.

Their pastrami makes an air-tight argument for why Jews thought it was okay to give up bacon. Their preparation of tongue, served warm, embarrasses the integrity of any deli owner in the Chicago area. After My wife, who is originally from the area, whisked me away here for the first time, I asked her, "why can't this exist where we live?" The sanguine elation that rushed to my face after it had cried uncle to three behemoth piles of tongue, pastrami, and corned beef rivaled an Eastern-block kid who had just devoured his first Big Mac.

Be sure to eat 5 helpings of vegetables as your previous meals and wash them down with piping hot green tea. Your sudden chloresterol intake will demand it.

Thanks!! Great report, I especially like the line about the pastrami [noticing after the fact that it's now the banner quote too. Good one Mods.]

And thank the Eternal One (must be all the praying I'm doing along with my yoga), a partner has emerged for my Harold's venture. Even with a dining companion, I fear not being able to do this place justice. The blintzes, pictured on the Roadfood site look incredible. Anyone else up for joining me for deli dinner in Jersey, Thursday PM?

I only fear, with the ingrained neurosis of my heritage that the pleasure of the meal will be overwhelmed by the sadness of not having a place like this closer to home.
