What: Meatless Meals (that means NO poultry, pork, fish or red meat but CAN include dairy and eggs) exchange
There are great omnivore dinner and dessert exchanges that happen monthly. This is for people interested in doing a vegetarian dinner exchange (without meat or meat stock etc, but can include eggs and dairy). We make 2-10 servings of one dish, and bring back 2-10 different dishes, depending on how many people are exchanging that month. Participants bring one pre-portioned serving of their food for everyone who has RSVP’d to come that month. A serving is whatever you think it is for your food item. We prefer healthy dishes, especially entrees, soups, salad, stews, legumes, grains, etc.

LTHers who don't want to exchange are welcome to join us for dinner. We go to vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurants around Chicago.

    When: TBD

    Where: Karyn's Cooked
738 N. Wells St. Chicago, IL
    312-587-1050

Karyn's is one of the the big names in vegan around Chicago - southern-style, hearty and affordable.

Number in the group: We will cap attendance at each gathering at 11 so that participants are never making more than 10 servings of anything. Couples will be counted as one serving.

The containers/delivery system: We use the Gladware 3 1/8 cup plastic containers (it’s the approximately 7” x 7” square with the pop-up lid). Everyone puts their food portions into those containers to bring and hand out at the gathering. You don't have to fill the container - just whatever is a serving size to you. You can freeze them or not. If you use something else to deliver your food that month, please also return the empty containers from the last round. Also, it helps to label your container, so we don't end up with mystery non-meat in the freezer.

The process: Everyone takes turns being the organizer each month. Each time we meet, someone will offer to organize the next month’s gathering. Approximately two weeks before the next gathering, the organizer will post a new thread to the events page announcing the date and the location for that month and asking for RSVP’s. The organizer updates the thread with RSVPs and makes the reservations at the restaurant.

If you're exchanging, please RSVP by one week before we meet. If you're joining for just dinner, please confirm by 3 days before we meet.

People can choose to stay to eat, or just exchange food and leave. Or people can just join for dinner. Just let the organizer know so they can get an accurate count for the reservation.

Please put me down as a very very tentative yes - all depends upon when the baby decides to arrive. Thanks Lemoneater for getting things going again!

I'm so sorry, but this will be my mom's belated mother's day. But I swear I'm interested in the exchange! I'll join up soon!

Wait? You're pregnant? You are going to love me, because I had no idea and didn't notice?

    When are you due?

Ha! I must have just been sitting at the table the entire time you saw me plus I think it has been a few months. Anyhow, I am due 5/13 so realistically, I am probably delusional thinking that I will make it to the exchange in May.

My mom can't cook! You didn't hear that from me.

I'll see you guys at another event soon. But either way, I want to see lots of posts from this meetup.

So, I'm thinking mushrooms a la greque for my offering. It's a good picnicking salad. (I'm optimistic that picnicking weather is here to stay.)

Well, it seems the timing is not good this month. The veg exchange is postponed to a later date.

    HI,

As a dedicated omnivore, I do plan to drop in on the vegetarians this summer.

    Regards,
