As I was in Dulles Airport last week, I was shocked to see that my dream was made a reality...Chipotle was serving huge breakfast burrittos! Does anyone have any information as to when/if this sensation will be hitting the Chicago market?

Seems like a no-brainer from a business standpoint. Perhaps they could generate something worthwhile, but I doubt it....

I Love a good breakfast burrito. It's pretty hard to mess that up, although I would assume that an establishment like Chipolte would make the egss in advance, and then the customers would be able to pick what other stuff is thrown into them. Potatoes, onions, meats (would need to add some Chorizo), salsas, etc. It would never be as good as one made to order, but I could see some value in them. Heck, even McDonald's breakfast burritos are not bad. One drawback, no drive-thru.

I really don't have some innate hatred of chains. I like a Whopper, McChicken, and I will muck down some Taco Bell once in a while. Chipotle, however, boils my blood. I would also assume like thetrob that a breakfast burrito would be easy fixins, and a no brainer, but I have 137% faith that Chipotle would make eggs, and potatoes an inedible, super salty, mess of brown globs like they do with the rest of their food.
I would LOVE to find the food at Chipotle edible. I really would. Prove me wrong, Chipotle. Please.

The problem is they can't load it with half a pound of rice....or can they?

Here's an older blog post about the Chipotle breakfast (potatoes take the place of rice and yes, there is chorizo)

I actually am a big Chipotle fan and would love to see them roll these out.

Breakfast burrito of choice right now though is the "Torpedo" from Tacos El Norte in Highwood (steak, fried eggs with soft yokes, grilled onions, melted cheese and maybe some other stuff). Might have to go get one tonight.

I wouldn't call myself a big fan but I also don't get the Chipotle hostility. They are head and shoulders above most of the stuff that's out there and if I had to decide between the abominations of Subway/Jimmy Johns and Chipotle, it would be a no-brainer for me.

I also don't get the "loaded with a half pound of rice" characterization; first of all, it's a gross exaggeration and second of all, they make it in front of you so you are in full control of the process. You can ask for more rice, less rice or no rice at all. Heck, ask for 3 grains of rice -- you'll get an odd look or two, but they'll comply. Gotta give 'em props overall for decent ingredients and the above-mentioned customer control over the process.

Heck, they've spawned a number of local format knock-offs, notably Chutney Joe's and I Dream of Falafel.

I actually ask for no rice when I go there. They won't give you extra beans though..

I've noticed that many (all?) airport Five Guys serve breakfast, too.

    They do!

I can't say I've been to a ton of different locations or go that often, but the few I've been to will always give me double beans. I ask for both the black and the pinto beans every time and have never been turned down from getting a serving of each.

Beans are the second best food on earth. (after cheese...which I ironically don't get at Chipotle because it's so bland there w/ the cup of hot salsa I have them dump on my food that it's not worth the calories.)

I'm imagining chipotle breakfast would be great hangover food.

I think they will give you a spoonful of each when they would typically give you a spoonful and a half. So yeah, I guess you are getting a bit extra. At least that is my experience at Chipotle and (more so) Qdoba, which I would frequent when traveling a lot for work and dieting. You can get a naked burrito or burrito bowl with no rice or cheese and a ton of salsa and come up with a fairly healthy, tasty, low calorie meal. At least by fast food standards, that is.

But yeah, I haven't had much of a problem asking for a little bit of extra beans when requesting no rice. I can only remember one time where I was denied/told I'd have to pay extra. You can get a side of beans for less than they charge for guac on you burrito.

As for breakfast at these places, I've only had it once at the Qdoba at Sea-Tac. It was a burrito with chorizo, potatoes, queso and salsa. It was alright, but I never got it again (although I took many more early flights out of the same airport).

FWIW, my husband orders a veggie burrito bowl at the Chipotle in Highland Park, gets the rice, and requests a "triple scoop" of beans (much to my mortification) every time. Never has he been denied, asked to pay more, or even given a funny look. Ah, the suburbs.

I've seen people ask for extra meat and not be charged, especially when you get steak and they literally put six pieces in your burrito. They may have just gotten lucky though.

This was in the suburbs too but I don't really know why that's relevant.
