Hello all, I'm new to the group and thank you all for info gained before 7/8 trip to Chicago.
Dinner Friday night at Wishbone (west loop) was great - good food good value.
Mrs. and I had crab cakes and corn pancakes straters and BBQ pork san and chicken fried steaks mains. CFS was a NY strip, about 8-oz breaded, tender, and thicker than I would have expected. Good mashers and an unexpected spinach salad side for $11. My only bitch was brown gravy, instead of white cream gravy.
Service was fine, overall a good deal.,

Comments welcome. I have reports for Riverview Tavern, Kiki's Bistro, and Fox - Obel for breakfast, but would like to hear back before posting more. As a newbie, I don't want to intrude.

    Regards,

    Jeff,

Please post away. It's always great to see new folks and get their take on things.

I just had a great brunch at the Wishbone on Lincoln last weekend.. I had the chicken sausage hash w/2 eggs, and it was great, but the highlight of the visit was my father-in-law's fried catfish, homefries, and eggs. The catfish was very good, and his potatoes were out of this world--crispy on the outsides, soft inside, and SO garlicky I wanted to lick the plate clean.. I wish they served those potatoes in the hash..

Wishbone does really, really good office lunch catering, too. We customarily get blackened catfish and blackened chicken with the mango chutney, corn bread, a great big fruit salad, and lots of sides - the green beans with mushrooms and garlic are FABULOUS, and I am not a GB fan by any stretch of the imagination. I don't know what else they put in those beans, but I have now twice - twice! - had an entire plateful just for dessert. Good eats!

Nothing makes me happier than Wishbone corn-cakes on Sunday morning! They are sweet and delicious every time, and the watermelon lemonade is quite tasty too!

The corn cakes are my favorite, too! I love them with the andouille sausage, red pepper sauce and scrambled eggs. I also like being able to get fresh squeezed juices. I had a bead party at the bead store up the street 5 years ago and had the food catered by Wishbone. One of the servers helped me carry the trays up the block and set up. Good food for all occasions!

Bumping this very old thread to report the news, per Sula, that after 26 years in its current space, Wishbone will be moving out due to a rent increase . . .

at chicagoreader.com, Mike Sula wrote:Wishbone founder Joel Nickson confirmed Thursday that he is moving his southern food icon, a pioneer of the West Loop/Fulton Market District restaurant scene, after 26 years on Washington and Morgan.

    The reason? Higher rent.

"We have a location 1/2 a mile to the east lined up but yes, a lot of work and no fun moving," he told me in a Facebook message. "This neighborhood has gotten too pricey and as you know it is all a percentage battle and when you don’t own you have to ask how much in beans and rice can I sell and pay yourself."

High rents force Wishbone out of its West Loop home after 26 years
