I went to iChef (1752 W Algonquin Rd Hoffman Estates, IL 60192) with my Chinese parents who wanted me to try their new find. The decor seemed pretty standard suburban Chinese and the place wasn't very busy for a Saturday evening. The standard english menu was well, standard with all the usual suspects. The gems were on the Chinese section in the back of the menu .
Unfortunately I didn't have a camera but we had some dishes that both impressed my parents and I liked as well. Song fish soup (enough for 6), the chef personally served us and brought us vinegar to put into the soup which made the fish in soup reminiscent of crab (vinegar being the traditional dipping sauce of Shanghainese freshwater crabs). Apparently the other soups such as the West Lake Beef Soup passed muster with my parents as well. Pine cone fish: crispy whole fillet with a sauce that manages to infuse the all the bits of fish (no blandness in the middle) with a touch of sweetness. Our server was happy to make recommendations and the chef visited us during our meal to make sure we were enjoying his work. The price point is comparable or slightly lower than Chef Ping. The food is generally less salty than Chef Ping and Yu's though that might be due to regional cuisine differences (northern vs Shanghainese).
Apparently there's a weekend Shanghainese brunch menu (might possibly be translated into English now) as well but I haven't tried it yet. I hope others will try this unassuming restaurant tucked in a suburban strip mall and report back!
