Well, this is something of a pedestrian choice, but I like it: Athena.

    Papagus in Oak Brook.

Mmmm... The best I ever had.

Slow roasted and placed on a bed of Orzo pasta with a light coating of tomato sauce.

Barba Yianni in Lincoln Square serves a solid version of yiouvetsi--basically the dish that was described above from Pegasus. Expect a Fred Flintsone sized lambshank served over orzo with tomato sauce.

The meat is usuallly "fall-from-the-bone" tender, though it is often the luck of the draw that determines the bone to meat ratio you will get. In any case, it's an incredible bargain--~$12.

They offer nice outdoor seating as well--not sure of the forecast for Sunday.

While I admit that it has been some time since I've had one, Marche used to serve a great lamb shank . I believe it's still on their menu.

I had a very nice lamb shank at Frontera Grill a few years ago. I don't know if it is still on the menu.

Athena in Greektown does a "lamb shank lemonato" which is simply braised in lemon, olive oil, garlic and oregano. Very tasty. But, my favorite is at Greek Islands (corner of Adams and Halsted in Greektown):
Lamb shanks braised and then served in an egg-lemon sauce with artichokes. While you're there order a side of Greek "lima" beans. Cooked with herbs, including dill, and a bit of tomato, they are not really limas but broad beans I think. Oh, and the baby octopus special when they have it is to die for...

For lamb in general, and for lamb shanks in particular, I haven't found any place that beats The Parthenon. Braised to falling-apart tenderness in a tomato-based sauce with a hint of cinnamon and served with rice and your choice of vegetables--I recommend the limas or the green beans.

I had a very good lamb shank recently at Tagine, part of the "kasbah tagine," braised for 2 1/2 hours with onions and sweet and savory spices, meltingly tender, and served ringed by toasted almonds, wedges of hard-cooked egg and cinnamon-infused prunes. Do order a side of couscous to go with it.

The Persian lamb shank at Cy's Crabhouse is easily the best thing on the menu (consider what that says about the seafood). It also is, objectively, pretty good.

I was in an Indian or Pakistani restaurant recently that had lamb shank on the menu. This restaurant was either on or just off Devon Ave. My father LOVES lamb shank and we're taking him to a local diner for it for his upcoming birthday, but when I saw this I thought he might want to try an Indian version instead. Also, they may have had a lobster dish on the menu too, but I can't be sure of that.

I can't remember where the hell this place was. Does anybody know where to get Indian/Pakistani Lamb Shank???

    Thanks!

Saturday we went to Norwood Restaurant for lamb shank and it was not on the menu that day. Can anyone recommend a good "American" version?

I Googled lamb shank, chicago and got quite a few results. Too many to mention here. Give it a try. There was a mention of Chez Joel (know nothing about it) that sounds like it might have an American version.

I had a great leg of lamb at Bistro Campagne a few weeks ago. Not American, per se, but delicious flavors & nothing outrageous in terms of seasonings (assuming that's why you're asking for "American" vs. Indian, etc.).

    The menu describes it as:

Yes, that's what I mean. Nothing that screams one nationality or another.

I've always loved the various lamb shank presentations at Greek Islands on Halsted. Arni Fournou is pretty straightforward - lamb shank with tomato sauce and potatos.

Great rec. I also used to love the wooden-trough version at the (erstwhile) Epicurean Hungarian. Szalas has a similar shank. The best I've had lately was at Balsan, over perfect grits...

pretty sure that tomato sauce has a healthy dose of cinnamon, which might scream "ethnic".

Don Juan's in Edison Park used to have a lamb shank barbacoa special that I would get every time it was available. I don't know if they still do.

Even though I second the opinion up thread that Greek Islands as the tastiest lamb shank in town, I recently discovered that on Wednesdays Kiki's Bistro at 900 N. Franklin serves a very substantial and very tender lamb shank with vegetables in a brown and well seasoned sauce.
But it is quite large and requires a solid apetite.
