I haven't forgotten JoelF's bacon page, but I'm hoping for something more ready-made that isn't thinly disguised bologna (e.g. turkey bacon) Non-pork sausages wouldn't be bad, either - though turkey does pretty well in those situations.

We are going camping, and are bringing a young Jewish friend with us. He'd be pretty comfortable as an LTHer (and his parents have said it's his decision what he eats or doesn't) but I'm not exactly comfortable being the traef fairy, either.

I like to use cured meats when camping for just a little bit of wiggle-room with food safety (obviously, I don't depend on the cure for food safety!) Unfortunately, most of my favorite cured meats: bacon, prosciutto, salami, etc. are pork based. I recognize I can do a beef salami, etc. but I'm looking to you to see how best to replace the other things - and where to source them. Northshore locations preferred.

The Kosher standby has long been "beef fry". Romanian has it (and the Jewel in Evanston should carry it as well). Shaevitz in Highland Park should also have it, but I'd go to Romanian. That way you can pick up some dogs and hard salami as well (and try their excellent Italian sausage too).

Good deal - beef fry was what I was looking for, but I've only had it in restaurants. Romanian Kosher it is!

Another blog mentioned lamb fry, which I'd love to try...anybody heard of it?

If you do get their hard salami I'd recommend having them thin-slice it for you (they add a small charge for this). Makes for a great anytime snack while camping.

Romanian Beef Fry is excellent - along with any of their deli products - expecially their corned beef, pastrami and hot dogs.

Also I would drive the extra distance to Raomanian's at 7200 N Clark install of the Jewel in Evanston on Howard as there is a hefty markup to the coldcuts -

I have had lamb bacon but form a kosher place in California it too was quite tasty

Personally, I like Moo and Oink's beef bacon. It is ugly to look at but is a great seasoning meat.

OOooh, unfortunately a trip to the South Side is out for this time, but I'll remember that next time we pass it by and I have a hankering to stop.
