Good to back and under new management.

NAV MAN has been a busy man and all that workin has been workin up a hunger.

On a mission to find a top notch grilled cheese sandwich in the loop area. Any suggestions from those in the know? Would absolutely love to dig in to a glorious grilled cheese.

For old-old-school, American cheese cooked on a griddle you can't beat the Cellars cafe at the Board of Trade. For a different take, Cafecito's Provoletta is fantastic. Provolone griddled until soft then pressed in a sandwich press with roasted peppers and chimichurri. I'm making myself hungry just thinking about it.

NAV MAN, If you can ever make it out of the loop and all the way up to Evanston, Edzo's serves an "inside out grilled cheese" that's well worth the trip.

The 2nd floor food court at Franklin Tower (fka the AT&T Building) at Franklin / Monroe does a good grilled cheese, cooked to order.

You select the bread, you can add tomatoes and/or bacon (the bacon is great), served with chips and coleslaw, or sub fries (can't recall if there is an up-charge for fries). Or maybe it only comes with fries now, they used to have homemade chips, but did a big overhaul earlier this year, chips might be gone.

The formal name is Café Bon Appétit and the stand is called Market Grill. Just look for the stand with the burgers and other items.

Whoah... that's right down the street from me. If it's as good as it sounds, I owe you a beer. Or a grilled cheese. With bacon.

I was sure my personal favorite grilled cheese (and overall favorite sandwich) in the Loop would have had multiple mentions in this forum already, but somehow I can't find any reference to it. It's the "Govind's Grilled Cheese" from the soup & sandwich counter at Seven on State inside Macy's. It consists of pulled slow-cooked short ribs, pickled red onions, and bel paese cheese. Very rich and much meatier than a standard grilled cheese, but absolutely delicious. (Confession: I was delighting in this sandwich long before I learned that "Govind" is Govind Armstrong, or that this sandwich was much-celebrated by Oprah and many other food lovers). It's easy to miss, sort of hidden at the bottom of the menu at the least-exciting looking counter at a food court filled with offerings by Bayless, Samuelsson, and Takashi, but it's a must-try.

Cafecito is IDID approved. Situated next to an urban hostel Cafecito results in some nice eye candy for I Do It Daily.

My friends in school used to call a "grilled cheese" a "cheese toastie". What a bunch of idiots. Polk Street Pub has a 5 cheese GC on the menu, but I've yet to indulge. I'll do it in the near future and report back. Good to have the NAV MAN back tackling the important culinary quests.

I retitled the thread to remove some boundries and foster additional GCS related discussion. I think as a forum we need to know exactly where discussion surrounding the grilled cheese takes place, and the new title will more clearly denote that such occurs within.

Petterino's mentioned upthread does it for $10.95 with soup. Back out the soup - it's about even.

It's been a long time, but Da Beef always loved the grilled cheese served at the cafeteria at Oscar Mayer grade school when he was young. Sure its seasonal and only open to those in school but if you can manage to pretend like your there for class or working as a substitute go try one. Two pieces of white bread, a slice of melted Kraft cheese in da middle and you have a happy, happy six year old.

I do it by the minute.

You might have some new places to eat grilled cheese-- so-called "serial entrepreneur" Jonathan Kaplan of Flip-videocam fame is starting a grilled-cheese restaurant chain:

When I first heard of the all-grilled-cheese concept (the now-closed Grilled Cheese NYC) I thought it was a good idea, but if it can't stay afloat in NY I'm not sure of its viability as a chain. Ditto Sloppy Jo's. I would have thought a retro-school-cafeteria inspired menu could find a happy landing, but it's likely a tough sell long-term.
