I think I will try that for lunch. You mean the Cafeteria area upstairs? I love that place.

Yeah, my mother calls cheese that you put on toast and then broil in the oven "grilled cheese". It's good, but it's not grilled cheese.

Anyone else find it strange that a grilled cheese is not made on a grill? Might have to give that one a try.....

Since we're getting into the exotica, let us not forget the cheesy tacos at Raymond's (open to 4am Fri & Sat).

As long as we're going this far afield, let's add the plain quesadilla at Rubi's (Maxwell St. Market). All the basics are there: grill, cheese, and who needs bread when you've got a fresh-made tortilla to wrap it all in.

I'm not advocating for the place for any other reason (think very loud, annoying post-frat boy crowd) but the Pony on Belmont (a few doors east of Scooters) does have a 14" grilled cheese that is really good. Damn it.

I guess this begs the question: is there a difference between a grilled cheese with gyro meat and a gyro sandwich with melted cheese?

I had some leftover gyros meat from lunch yesterday, so I added it to a grilled cheese, along with some onion and tomato from said gyros for lunch today....awesome. :D

Had lunch at Nordstrom's today. Did the grill cheese, it's on the kids menu with a sprinkling of chips and a wee bit of fruit + beverage for $5.83 with tax.

I subbed sourdough for the wheat, forgot to ask them what kind of cheese.

Grilled a bit too light, I don't even like my bread toasted dark so this is saying something, and the cheese wasn't melted. The cheese appeared to be American slices.

I would do this again, especially if other types of cheese are available, and tell them to make sure the cheese is melted. Also got a half order of the home made potato chips.

Yelp Chicago has a weekly newsletter this week 'Yelp's Grilled Cheese Smackdown' with some ideas for restaurant versions of grilled cheese sandwiches:

Yelp predicts that grilled cheese is fast on its way to becoming the new cupcake. You heard it here first, folks! Many yelpers – being a wise bunch – are already hip to this fact; obviously, when you coat something in butter and stick cheese in the middle, it's gonna be a hit. This week, we thought we'd make our predictions public by sharing some of the meltiest sandwiches in Chi-Town.

really surprised about this...so they don't have it on the regular menu--just the kids? That would explain the crappy cheese--when I used to order it, it was definitely cheddar and real and melted. Sorry to hear.

Unless that article was written in 2003 (the year I went through a grilled-cheese-with-bacon phase and ordered it whenever I saw it on a bar menu, which was fairly often), I have a beef with their claim.

It's possible that I misinterpreted, and really they're trying to say that, while grilled cheese has always been available pretty much everywhere, it wasn't "the new hotness" until just now, when they deemed it so. I was at Chuck Wagon this weekend, up in Wilmette, using up a Groupon. Had the "Waitress Special", which is a grilled cheese with gyro meat on top. Also comes with a tomato and onions.

Pretty damn terrific sammich it is, too. Though describing it as a grilled-cheese-with-gyros is a misnomer.. they put on a whole heap of gyros, freshly cut from the cone and lightly griddled... a very good grilled-gyro-sandwich with cheese, in a sense. Think it was 6.25 or some such... (no 10-buck-grilled-cheese here!). If in the area, very much worth a visit IMHO.

This thread makes me hungry. Grilled cheese ingredients are: bread, cheese, and butter. From time to time, I'll mix it up and do a grilled cheese "Deluxe" with tomato. Anything more and you're seriously pushing the boundaries of my grilled cheese comfort zone.

Close to home (Logan Square) there's an awesome (but expensive!) grilled cheese sandwich that I am in love with. Rewster's Cafe does a grilled cheese sandwich with soup, salad, or fruit for $10. Very pricey for cheese and bread but the combination of pave d'aphinois and brioche slathered in honey butter call my name about once a month.

    Rewster's Cafe is located at:

I can't believe I forgot one of my fave's in the Loop, although on the pricier side. I just don't eat GC and tomato soup in the summer. I hit it once or twice a month in the fall and winter. I don't think it's on the menu, but everybody orders it kinda thing. It comes with a salad or fries.

Interestingly, today there is a Groupon for... a Grilled Cheese Dinner for Two!

    http://www.groupon.com/r/uu8217324

At Cheesie's Pub in Lakeview (any opinions? Never been - is it worth picking up?) Some of
them dont really sound like grilled-cheese's though (the Caprese Grilled Cheese? Really?)

Quite the coincidence, anyway (or maybe Yelp isnt the only one picking up hints :-)

I had their Jalapeno Popper sandwich a couple of weeks ago. It was merely OK. They use a lot of cheese, but it doesn't seem to be great cheese--the flavors are pretty bland. The smoked chipotle mayo on the side was sweeter than the sandwich.
