I am sadly not patient enough to render my own chicken skin and make cracklin's... anyone know where I can get some gribenes (preferably without a 30-mile trek)? For what I'm planning, chicken would be best, but I'll take other poultry. I know I can get chicharones... not what I'm looking for.

    Joel,

Paulina Market often has goose fat with gribenes in pint containers, and I usually pick up one or two when I see it. Not chicken, but mighty good stuff.

Cooker's Red Hots in Deerfield used to proudly display a sign advertising gribenes on a wall near the register. If their location works out for you, give them a buzz.

A little farther than you want, but I know they have fried chicken skin near the cash register at Sun Wah

    Hi,

If gribenes is the crisp chicken skin, in Morton Grove it is available at China Chef. It may not be on their menu, though it is on a family dinner menu. I recall ordering it a la carte for around $4.

I have seen gribenes on the menu at Michael's Hot Dog in Highland Park. I ordered them a long time ago, though I never thought they were chicken skin. If anything, I seem to recall slow cooked onions. If you considered going there, I would call to see if it is still on the menu and what it may be.

Just looked over at the menu, to find, "Low-Cal Gribbiness" 2.99. I have a feeling it is a play on words and my recollection of slow cooked onions may be correct.

    Regards,
