The Illinois Mycological Association (IMA) will celebrate the richness of fall mushrooms in Illinois with an exhibit of 50 to 100 varieties of mushrooms on Sunday, September 4, 2011 from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm at the Chicago Botanic Garden at 1000 Lake Cook Road in Glencoe, Illinois.

Members of the IMA will provide information and answer questions regarding fungi. Speakers include renowned mycological educator, Dr. Tom Volk (Univ. of Wisconsin-La Crosse), and author of Illinois Mushrooms, Joe McFarland (http://illinoismushrooms.com). A children's education area will be available, and mushrooms books and t-shirts will be for sale.

Mycology is the study of fungi. The Illinois Mycological Association is a group of professional and amateur mycologists and mushroom enthusiasts committed to the promotion of scientific and educational activities related to fungi. Our interests in mycology include their use by humans as a source for medicine and food. In addition, we seek a greater understanding of their dangers, such as poisoning or infection, and their benefits to natural ecosystems. One of our major goals is to educate the general public about the importance of fungi in an effort to enlighten others about these magnificent organisms. The IMA supports conservation efforts to preserve the integrity of natural areas in order to preserve and promote fungal diversity and communities.

Cathy2 Thanks for posting this. I just got back from the event. I sat through Tom Volk's lecture and it was very worthwhile. I also picked up Joe McFarland's book but due to a previous commitment could not stay for the lecture.

Good event, lots of good info. Fun time.
    Thanks again.

I also just got back from the show. This was far and away the best attended IMA show ever, with 2575 people coming through the doors:) Huge thanks to all the IMA volunteers who made the show so successful! The displays were great, lots of interesting things to learn and Tom Volks' presentation was fun and informative.

    HI,

I found I had to leave town for the weekend. I'm sorry I missed this event.

Just curious, what color was Tom Volk's hair this weekend? The last time I saw him, it was a bright blue.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Hi,

I like to consider Monday's night program our dress rehearsal for a Chicago Botanic Garden demo next year. Now I just have to get the Garden to sign onto that.

And you are our newest member, too! Thanks!

    Regards,
    Cathy2
