Proof that the Evanson Lunch Group™ does occasionally lunch in Evanston!
Chicago Magazine's Dish wrote:Like a grounded outlet, Central St Café (2800 Central St., Evanston; 847-864-4444) will have three prongs when it opens near the end of July, if all goes well. First, a restaurant/café serving French and Italian food that the chef/owner, Mitchell Dulin, served at The Chardonnay (1983–1989) and Venice Cafe (1993–2002). Second, a wine and craft-beer store, where you can buy bottles to drink at the restaurant for a $7.50 corkage fee. Third, an upscale cheese shop and deli. In addition to being his own designer and contractor, Dulin says he will run both the kitchen and the front of the house. “Yes. I do everything,” he says. “I have a lot of energy.”

Well, it didn't quite open on schedule, but it's open now, and the Evanston Lunch Group will check it out on the 21st.

I'll be there, despite Dish's dubious simile (a grounded outlet?!).

I unfortunately cannot attend. The 21st is the one day next week that I have to take one of the Mom's for a doctor appointment and won't be back in time for lunch.

Glad to hear it! Sorry you missed the picnic and will have to miss this also! I told nr706 I was getting ready to have the police check on you....

Perhaps nr706 will post some photos, but until then, the most appropriate thing to say about Central Street Cafe is that it was a pleasant location for a reasonably priced lunch. The cafe is a combination restaurant and market. At present the items in the market are not extensive, but are well-chosen (the wines seem well-selected, and they do have a good beer list). The owner and servers are very friendly and accommodating. Of the dishes that we ordered, I found the Grilled Caesar Salad the most interesting (yes, the lettuce was slightly grilled), and the Croque Monsieur was good (the other sandwiches were a bit dry). CSC is not really a destination-type restaurant, and it is a little way from the main Central Street shopping area, but I am sure that for Evanstonians who live along Central, it is a happy addition to the neighborhood. I wish them well.
