I am hoping for a recommendation of a fairly nice, romantic Chinese restaurant where I can send my sister for a dinner with her husband somewhere near their 20th wedding anniversary. (The gift theme for 20 years is china, but they neither need nor want any dish ware, so I am stretching the theme a bit). I know Boston has a pretty robust Chinatown scene, but all the places I have found on the interwebs are food first, and ambience somewhere around 12th. I myself would not have a problem with this, but my sister is a little more particular.

It may be too much to ask for an Arun's-level establishment (Thai, not Chinese, I know, but at least it's somewhere in the ballpark), but any tips on a relevant restaurant anywhere in eastern MA would be greatly appreciated!
    We crack us up.

Hmmm. Depending on what side of town they live on, Blue Ginger might be doable. Also worth a look is Myers and Chang.

Blue Ginger gets very mixed reviews from people I trust. (I haven't been for over 10 years but it seems it's riding on Ming Tsai's considerable reputation not on the food merits.)

In addition to Myers + Chang, I'd suggest checking out East by Northeast in Cambridge. It's our local equivalent to David Chang's momofuku noodle bar. Interesting flavors, nice wine and cocktail list, although not particularly "upscale". The tasting menu could be fun for them. http://exnecambridge.com/menu/

Also Shanghai Gate in Allston does good food in a slightly more white-tablecloth atmosphere. Have a look at the menu and see what you think. http://www.shanghaigateboston.com/
