Square Knish

Does anyone know anywhere in Chicago where you can get a square knish? I've tried every deli I could find in the city, and even a few in Skokie. I refuse to believe that there are no square knishes between the Appalachians and the Rockies. Please, I'm dying over here.

If you don't mind my asking, why do you want a square knish? Whatsa matter with the round ones?

Square knishes are prepared differently than the round ones. The round ones are baked, while the square ones are fried or grilled. Because of this, they are also sometimes spiced differently.

As I noted here, the Costco on Touhy in Niles is selling Gabila's square knishes - a pack of 9 for $5.99. I am very impressed with both the flavor and texture. I now realize that I'm a square knish fan as I much prefer the thick, crispy exterior to the soft exterior of the knishes one finds at Manny's or Kaufman's.

Go to Steve's Deli, in River North. They're also very, very good. Unlike, say, Kaufman's, whose knishes have a very thick crust, the ones at Steve's have a thin crust that doesn't overpower the filling. These are my favorite knishes in town. And yes, they are sort of square shaped, rather than the round balls at Kaufman's.
