I don't suppose Chinese food is what most Chicago visitors to Milwaukee go looking for, but based on one visit to the West Allis location, I'd say that Fortune is as good and authentic as any Cantonese place in Chicago's Chinatown.

There are two menus, a Chinese one (in English) and an "American" one, the latter containing familiar Chinese-American items. They brought both of them automatically. Our group was mixed and our order spread across both, and both were equally well prepared, fresh and flavorful.

The star of the evening was the squid with chili and spicy salt, very tender squid in a light, crisp salt-and-pepper coating, mixed with sliced jalapeno. I also particularly enjoyed the savory shredded pork with tangy preserved mustard pickles. Even the General Tso's chicken, ordered from the American menu by a timid member of our party, was an exemplary version. I also had a cup of BBQ pork noodle soup from that menu, rich chicken broth laden with noodles, chunks of barbecue pork and veggies, very satisfying.

I regret the phone-camera photos aren't very sharp.

The West Allis location has a typically dumpy Chinatown restaurant ambiance.

    Great find, LAZ.

I eat at Fortune in West Allis whenever I get home to Milwaukee. It's the best Cantonese in the Midwest, in my opinion. And, that's been backed up by many of my Chinese-American friends.

I've yet to find the equal of their eggplant & salted fish casserole. The salt & pepper squid is terrific, and the beef with rice noodles will please even the most "American" palate. They also do a very good version of 'shrimp in mayo', which I believe is called Honey Walnut Shrimp on their menu.

I've only ever been to the West Allis location. Nothing against Hales Corners, the other is just closer to my parent's house.

    Hi,

Since you are now in the Milwaukee region, you will want to try Harvey Moy, Chinese in Menomonee Falls, Wis.

I once found myself in Menomonee Falls. I inquired with locals about where the falls were located. They thought I was rather odd. It's no Niagra, though it does exist.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Milwaukee seems quite heavily supplied with Chinese-American spots.

Man I haven't eaten at Moys in probably 15 years but I used to love that place. It was the only Chinese place within a short distance from my parents house (even then it was a good 15-20 min drive).
