I'm not much for anything but cheese on a good burger, but that burger with duck egg looks amazing.

What will make my day is when they put a Hundred Dollar Bill on a burger

Got some good news yesterday. Have the next few afternoons off, and wanted to take advantage of them.

Wasn't feeling like Kuma's but wanted a burger. Internal monologue: "Hey, I've never been to Edzo's. The internet loves it. I've been meaning to get up there. I should try it this afternoon. I think I will do that."

Checked the website. Checked the prices. Memorized directions. Got some cash. Checked the hours. Closed Mondays, got it. It's not Monday, so we're good. Be there before 4. Got it. Plenty of time.

Got in the car. Half hour drive north. Circled the block, hunting for parking. Found a spot. Quarter for the meter. Here we go. Here comes Edzo's.

Walk up to the shop. It's 3pm, plenty of time. Tug on the door.

Locked.

Paper on the door: "Edzo's will be closed Tuesday the etc etc etc"

Profanity.

I almost went to Burger King to double down on the WTF feeling.

Get home, get on the website to see if it was my dumbass fault for missing the "we will be closed" announcement.

Edzo's site crashes my browser, same way it did this morning.

Well, that was a fun afternoon.

A fine alternative would have been Wiener and Still Champion. No milkshakes, but a great menu. Next time...

Not to make you feel bad, but had you looked on the twitter feed he posts on his website's blog page (bottom right), he had announced that he would be closed the 28th.

Thankfully, I checked before I drove over today.

And you raise a good point. It is better form to post closures on the website, rather than twitter, because EVERYONE can use the website, but not everyone chooses to have a twitter account.

The Twitter feed is public. I don't have a Twitter account and can read Eddie's posts.

Funny I was going to go today also but noticed the twitter feed that he was closed today.

I tend to call, even though I use Twitter & the rest. If no one answers, I assume they aren't open.

I'm genuinely sorry, Karl. That most certainly doesn't sound very fun, and your inconvenience and annoyance is totally my fault.

I usually try and update the website with a banner alerting folks of closures outside of our normal hours, along with the twitter and facebook pages.

I completely forgot to do the website until I was at my home computer, and I didn't have the log in info at the time, so the notice didn't get put up the way it should've.

My apologies, again, for what sounds like it was a big pain in the butt for you.

I've had this happen to me a bunch of times over the years. It's always my fault for never calling the restuarants. But I was WAY farther from home...

I've gone to Wells Brothers (Racine), Timpone's Restaurant (Urbana), and Rocco's (South Bend) for some of the best pizzas around, and all were closed when I got there. All I had to do was call. Timpone's was the most upsetting because it is in my top 3 thin crust pizzas anywhere, and I was on the way to Nashville (two different times!) when this happened. This also happened when I went to Kewpie Burger in Racine and they were closed for a private party. At least I had Wells Brothers before I went there on that trip!

Yeah, Eddie should have a sign - "Sorry we're closed, go to Wiener and Still Champion instead!"

I'm pretty sure that there's some law of physics that dictates that this is more likely to happen the further from home you are. My evidence: This has happened to me twice...once in New Orleans (didn't know that Casamento's closes for the summer) and once in Barcelona (tried to go to Jamonisimo only to find it closed for a random festival day).

Seriously. In Tampa over Memorial Day, all I wanted to do was go to Waltz's Fish Shack and of course the first night we go, they sell out of food within an hour and are closed the next 3 days we are there.

Why is it that every time I find myself headed towards Evanston (Harry Potter!) it's always on a day that Edzo's is closed?

Why???????

I am damn sad -- i could almost taste that burger...

I'm posting so that others headed similarly do not waste that walk to Edzo's.

Sorry, friend.

So based on this thread (and the GNR thread) and a ringing endorsement by resident burger guru, Da Beef, I got to swing by Edzo's last week (I actually did the Evanston trifecta: Edzo's, Bop n' Grill, and Weiner and Still Champion) and man was I impressed.

I ordered the Char Burger (the standard meat, no upgrade though the option to upgrade is a great concept), medium rare, with Cheddar and onions. I wanted to really taste the beef so that's why I went with those simple toppings (plus I have never been much of a fan of lettuce or ketchup on a burger). The burger was just perfect. Rosy red in the middle, perfect amount of seasonings, and deliciously juicy. It tasted how I remember homemade burgers my parents would make when I was a kid. These were burgers with beef that was ground that morning by a small family-run butcher ship/liquor store. Simply put, I loved this burger.

I ordered the buffalo fries and used my better judgement and skipped the shake because I knew I would be full. The buffalo fries were, like the burger, spectacular. They managed to stay pretty crispy even with the sauce and blue cheese. I loved how the cheese was in tiny crumbles so it dispersed nicely throught the entire pile of fries.

The next day I ate at Bop n' Grill and as I was walking back to my conference I made a detour (despite being pretty full) to try the famed Nutella shake. I couldn't resist and was glad I did. I was worried that it might be too over the top with Nutella flavoring but it was the perfect amount. Another great menu item.

Cannot wait to get back to Evanston and try the griddled burgers and some other fries.

I'm on a dessert break right now and I don't even particularly care for chocolate, but that Mexican Chocolate with Chili shake is a MUST HAVE!

I'm visiting Edzo's again Wednesday and think I'm going to push myself and try some new menu items. Has anyone tried the turkey burger or portobello sandwich? What about the Sheboygan brat?

Try the inside out grilled cheese. Ask for it with giardinara. Seriously.

I'm not a big cheese person, but thanks for the recommendation, Steve If I try it, I'll definitely get it with giardiniera.

There is no way this could be anything but awesome.

Had to report back on yet another great meal I opted for the portobello burger, which was a very tasty vegetarian option. So I felt a little less guilty about devouring a stack of Eddie's famous truffle fries and finally trying the Spicy Mexican Chocolate Shake that totally lived up to my expectations. I'm so stuffed right now!

Finally stopped by Edzo's today for the fist time. Wife had a char burger (perfectly cooked medium rare) with raw onion, regular fries and a hot fudge malt. I had a double griddled with tomoato and raw onion, old fries and a coffee malt. Absolute hamburger heaven along with an outstanding malt and some of the best fries I've ever had. Needless to say, we won't wait so long to return.

I would really like to eat here. But I worry the burger won't make the trip back to work without suffering. (It's a 15 minute trip). I think I'll have to make a special run out here one day.

I was running too late to eat there. But I can't stay away for long...I've had those shakes on my mind forever.

I'm thinking about heading up there this weekend (if Northwestern is playing an away game)... do I have to get there early or risk waiting in line for an hour+ a la Hot Doug's?

There will probably be a line, but it moves quickly. I've never waited more than 20 minutes or so on a busy day.

But Northwestern is playing at home (v. Penn St.) but not til 6:00 in case that factors into your decision...
