Where can one purchase sausages by the pound instead of the package?
Foodstuffs did this years ago.
We like chicken sausage, brats, italian, etc......

Post #2 - May 30th, 2010, 7:31 amoff the top of my head: Whole Foods chain, Cermak Grocery chain, Gene's sausage, Paulina, Lincoln Meat Market, Geppherth's, any of dozens of Polish stores on the NW side, most of the dozens (hundreds?) of Mexican grocery stores in Chicago, Beograd, Fox & Obel, Mercado. After a cup of coffee, I'll probably come up with a few dozen more....defended from strong temptations to social ambition by a still stronger taste for tripe and onions." Post #5 - May 31st, 2010, 10:50 amDave Zier and crew make a small but mighty variety of sausages at their shop in Wilmette, Zier's Prime Meats & Poultry. I've purchased and enjoyed their brats, veal brats, breakfast sausage, turkey sausage, Italian (mild and hot), andouille, hotdogs, salami, pepperoni, as well as a variety of Polish, including kabanos, all of which are made in-house. They usually have some but not all of them fresh, in the case, at any one time. Other product is cryovacked and either refrigerated or frozen.
As mentioned above, another sausage mecca is Ream's Elburn Market in Elburn, IL. The variety available there is vast and the quality is outstanding.
I highly recommend both places.

Bende, a Hugarian specialty store with two locations, has a good selection of Hugarian sausages, of varying degrees of both spice and dryness. and they have a wonderful garlicky bacon which you slice thinly and eat raw like a cold cut, rather than cooked. Wonderful stuff.

I just picked up 2 5lb boxes today - I regret to report the price has skyrocketed from $6.95 to $6.98.

Post #11 - October 23rd, 2011, 2:14 pmHi- Has anybody tried the handmade chicken sausage at Whole Foods? I noticed it was on sale for $4.99 a pound this week. Is it good? I was in Meijer's on Golf in Niles last night, and they had alfresco chicken sausage on sale for $3.79, and I love their sausage. I bought a package of it. I sed to buy it al Jewel, but Jewel quit carrying it, and Dominick's does not carry it. Thanks, Nancy

I like the WF handmade chicken sausage, and have eaten several of the varieties on a regular basis. Flavorful, not dry, and loosely packed compared with the hockey-puck texture of most packaged chicken sausage. I cook with it regularly.
