Yes Virginia, There IS a Kow Kow Pressed Duck

From the Chicken Vesuvio Thread I wrote:On a slight, but humorous tangent, I stopped in to GWiv's beloved Kow Kow the other day to pick up an egg roll to go (it was snack time). While I was waiting, I looked over the menu. Upon seeing not one, but two versions of one of my favorite old school cantonese dishes asked the curt, no nonsense hostess, "What's the difference between the pressed duck and the Kow Kow pressed duck?" Her explaination, "We don't serve Kow Kow pressed duck."

Tonight I stopped at Kow Kow for a quick dinner to go and asked (as I do nearly every time I go there) what the difference was between pressed duck and Kow Kow pressed duck. At last I got an answer to my question. Kow Kow pressed duck is pressed duck topped with bok choy, peapods and BBQ pork. Remembering GWiv's repeated warnings, I did not order it, but at least I can now get a good night's sleep.

When I asked I remember being told about the bok choy. Being an anti-vegitarian, I can't say whether the peapods were mentioned, but I'd have remembered the pork.

I'm almost a bit sorry that you finally got a reasonable answer to this question. The fact that the sole difference was that one was available and the other was not was one of my all-time favorite LTHForum moments. In terms of real laughter, it's right up there with Hammond's daughter's veggie friend who sucks her bacon. I'm still laughing.

Looking forward to some un-pressed duck on Friday.

In spite of G Wiv's taking one for the team with Kow Kow's pressed duck, my wife, uncle, grandmother, and I had the Kow Kow Pressed Duck last night for dinner (along with won ton soup, egg rolls, pork fried rice, and hong kong steak).

I've gotta say that the pressed duck wasn't bad at all. The texture is a bit weird (soft and gummy, perfect for the Kow Kow geriatric crowd) but the duck flavor wasn't bad at all. I'm sure that the fact it was covered in veggies helped it a great deal, but the plate was clean by the end of the meal.

The rest of the food remains among the best Amero-Chinese food around.
