Was trying to go see the Phillies put a hurting on the Sox today and arrived while the rain delay was still in effect. So rather than go into what we figured would be a called game, we decided to stop at the food stand which I believe is called Maxwell Street Depot (on 31st and Canal, right west of the train tracks), grab a bite and see if there would be a game.
This place serves pork chop sandwich, polish, hot dogs, and burgers. Basically it is a window and a long counter outside o eat at, with windows lining teh front so you can see the grill (and by grill I guess I mean griddle, no open fire) on the other side. Everything looked good, with a vat of steamed buns and a grill loaded with nice polishes, covered with a gigantic pile of grilled onions with pork chops stuffed into that pile. Pork Chop sandwich was $2.50 and came with fries. Nice big tender bone in chop, served on a plain hamburger bun with a slather of yellow mustard and a huge serving of nuclear hot grilled onions. One heck of a sandwich, though I fear the heat of the onions burned my mouth a bit and dulled my taste buds. As the rain was still going strong and every one of us envied what the other was eating we all ordered a second round of food. This time I had the polish which was $2.30 and served with fries as well. Nice crisp lightly charred exterior, and a nice smokey inside. I will have to say at this point my mouth was definately not tasting everything due to the heat of the food, so that is about all I can say about the polish. It was served with yellow mustard and grilled onions as well. Only after I finished did I notice they had a big jar of hot peppers and I would say both items would have benefited from the addition of these. They looked more like a green serrano that a sport, as they were longer than a finger.
Now, I am a Cubs fan and only venture to the Cell a few times a year, but this place was quite good. Anyone have any input on this place? It is nice as it is only a few blocks from the park. Would definately stop in next rain delay I find myself enjoying in Bridgeport as it is hard to get a meal so filling and good for < $5.00 (and actually it was probably 2 meals)
