We'll be in the area of Devon and Lincoln tomorrow around dinner time. I'm looking for recs for a place for dinner that has an especially warm, cozy, comfortable feel. Where the service is good and the room relaxing and quiet. Probably is not Indian, Chinese, Mexican, but you could convince me. Price range is very flexible.

In the immediate vicinity you have Myron & Phil's, an old, reliable steak & seafood restaurant, the original Lou Malnati's and Via Veneto, solid Italian. Plenty more options as you radiate outward.

In the immediate vicinity you also have Monastero's for Sicilian/Italian.

A mile north is Wholly Frijoles on Touhy for Mexican. L. Woods on Lincoln is also in that same area, and serves American supper club food. L. Woods (the former Bones) is as relaxed and comfortable as any place I can think of.

The obvious choice for me would be GNR winner Elephant Thai, but alas they are closed on Sunday.

Elephant Thai is also almost two miles away.

    How near is near?

We're driving and will be returning to the Oak Park area after wards, so near just means fairly quick to get to after appointment, not near for transportation issues. We've been to L Woods before, so that might be a good choice for us.

For your requirements, I'd recommend GNR Myron & Phil's. Malnati's is good but a bit louder, filled with sports memorabilia if that appeals. I haven't been to Via Veneto in a number of years but was not impressed when we went. L. Woods is Lettuce Entertain You with all its virtues and vices. It will be busy on a Sunday evening, not too quiet.

You might also consider GNR Smak Tak, excellent Polish food, only about a 10-minute drive west and a bit south of Devon and Lincoln.

    Two things about L. Woods:

    1. You can make reservations on OpenTable
    2. Their Sunday night Fried Chicken special is actually very good by any measure and is worth seeking out. This recommendation is coming from someone who normally wouldn't be caught dead in a LEYE restaurant by choice*.

    * Obvious exceptions are Everest, Tru and (maybe someday) L2O

Wholly Frijoles is my obvious first choice (and second and third), but has never been open on a Sunday. Monastero's gets a pass, Via Veneto is better and L. Woods is always reliable. I just ate at Myron & Phil's the other day and it's still a pretty good joint.

We had an early dinner at L Woods. The other half had the fried chicken dinner special which he enjoyed. He has a large piece leftover for lunch tomorrow. I had the fish and chips, which wasn't pretty on the plate, but the fish was pretty good.

    Thanks for all the recommendations.

I had a very nice dinner at L. Woods last night (which was a Sunday). The place was jammed. I loved it because it reminded me of going to Bones as a kid. We were a large group and most of us had ribs, which were (to my surprise) quite good. My dad was the first to say that they weren't as good as Smoque. Nevertheless, we all agreed that they were good. Others had the fried chicken, which was also good. Ceasar salad was done nicely. Twice baked potato and creamed spinach were excellent. Wisconsin Old Fashioned were perfectly made. We had a very large apple strudel for dessert that I believe that made from scratch during the meal. The only complaint was from a three year old who sent back her mac and cheese because it wasn't creamy, in favor of just mac and butter.

If there is a better place for beef ribs than L Woods, I have yet to find it.

L Woods for the most part is Bones. They changed the name years ago, but for the most part the food is the same. I used to go there all the time when I lived up north, and still enjoy it whenever I get a chance to go. Have always loved their double baked potatoes, chicken, ribs, etc. Their ribs and Smoques ribs are not in the same genre. Both are really good, Smoque skews to the "authentic BBQ", "Smoked" side of the equation, but that does not men the ones at L Woods are not well prepared and tasty.
